PVC intake: how do you make one?

I heard something about making the intake tubing with pvc pipe. Who has had this done and how did it turn out? I am very interested. What I don't undersatnd is how can you make elbows? This is what I have to work with. What can I do to make it better without droping $200?

Try the ISR mod.

Haven't done it.

The air box mod has given me fuel economy I can live with. You can find it here

That helps. I just realized you can buy that suff with several diferent bendds to it so I guess all you need is a ruber boot tha will reduce from 3" to whatever the trotle body size is.

I used the stock elbow from the throttle body, used a section of 2" ABS pipe, connected it to the air sensor with a rubber thing that goes from 2" to 3", and then to my cone filter.

I used ABS because it is lighter, stronger and thinner than PVC, and it is black, so it looks better than white PVC.

I did it, and if you want the pics, just let me know and I'll email them to you.

Here's a thread about a snorkel where BruceTS put some bend into ABS with heat. I don't imagine you could make an elbow but that might help line things up better for you and also make the mod look really custom.

I replaced mine with a piece of 3" Black Flex Hose that we have here at work. I was able to clamp it down nice and tight over the TB Intake and AFM Outlet. I used the flex hose so I didn't have to worry about making bends in it. I think it will deal with the heat and elements under the hood quite well. We use it to pull the exhaust from our UV lamps that put out 500*F air and also sit in 600w/in of pure UV light and have no problems. Just another cheap idea for you.

Be careful with using flexible hose. If it's "accordioned" then the ridges in the side of the hose will disrupt the airflow and create an uneven response. The point of doing the ISR mod is to create as smooth as a path as possible for the air to get to the throttle body.

I built a intake for my 98 Dakota (318, 5spd, 4X4, sold), I used 3" ABS, 'fernco' couplers (made from rubber), hose clamps, and a cone filter, it worked great, opened the intake and let it inhale, although it would have been better with an exhaust system it did improve seat of the pants feel, and sound much better (like it would suck in a small animal or honda).

Even with the smaller openings, using a larger tube isn't all bad. When enough air builds pressure from the opening size differences. With a large opening going to small opening, it will act like a nozzle forcing air into the plenum at a higher velocity.

No, it is an extreme duty semi-ridged flex. It only has a 30*bend limit and flows nice and smooth on the inside. We use it to cool and exhaust our lamps, and the airflow in those things are more critical than what needs to flow thru my truck.

By removing the factory air cleaner and related baffling, replacing it with an open element filter, you remove alot of the restriction. This makes the MAF the most restricive part of the system and this can't be changed. So by adding a larger tube between the MAF and the TB, I don't think you would see any preformance gain.

Jake.
Yea, that's kindof what I thought but I cant help but wonder if the rippled elbows slow down the air flow at all. Still not shure what I will do if anything...
