89 4runner 3VZE - Hey guys, while trying to figure out a no start issue I pulled the fuel return line off the fuel pressure regulator & jumped the fuel pump in the diagostics port to make sure it was working. When the fuel pump kicks on fuel pours out of the regulator. This is with key on, engine off. Is this OK or is my regulator bad?

 

Some fuel should return to the tank.

You will have to find out what the fuel pressure is in the fuel rail, before the regulator, to find out whether the regulator is good or not.

Not sure it this would work on your engine...
Fuel Pressure Gage Piggybacked on CSI

 

My return line is getting zero fuel coming out from the FPR I’ve been reading forums for days cause I have a no start due to lean running condition. I’m lost. could this be because of the reg or could it be low pressure from else where ? I know my fuel lines are getting fuel and that my fuel injectors are pulsing as I can start my 4Runner with starting fluid and keep it going with fluid and did the good ol screw driver to the ear test and they all seem to work or at least the ones I can reach being there under the manifold. I’m stumped

 

If the fuel pump isn't getting enough pressure on the rail to open the fuel-return part of the FPR, then you'll never get enough fuel flow through the injectors.

IF you have the 3VZE, this tester https://www.pepboys.com/actron-profe...roduct/9484931 comes with the appropriate 10mm adapter to replace the bolt at the FPR. Note that the crush washers are not re-usable. I just left the adapter installed. If you want to put the original bolt back in, you'll need new washers.

If you have the 22re, I'm told the easy place to put a pressure tester is at the 8mm CSI bolt. Several on this site have built shop-made pressure testers for that port.

 

Okay so I changed just my pcv valve just cause it looked not okay. But also swapped a fuel filter on today and well the results are that with starting fluid it will turn on and stay idling now! As soon as I accelerate past a certain amount of rpm’s it want to die again. I think you’re correct that my problem is the fuel pump being faulty. It does seem to be a bit loud and whining. Got a new pump today too just didn’t feel like dropping the tank today. Thanks so much. If this fuel pump get my car back on the road I owe you a beer! Cheers !

 

You shouldn't have to drop the tank to replace the fuel pump on a 4Runner.

Look under the rear seat bottom for a hatch cover over the fuel pump location.

 

Sadly I have a 92 2nd gen I lifted my seat but you can only unhook electrical to the pump from there 😭
