Rear Window - Rolls down on its own!!

Got an interesting puzzle for the schematically inclined...

Drove to work today, keyed off and the back window rolled down on its own.

With IGN off (and window down):
- Rear switch on the gate does not work
- In-cab button does not work (not supposed to anyway)

With IGN on:
- In-cab button operates normally, it will roll the window up and down no problem

I tried pulling the topper bolt that kills the switch, no change.
I tried pressing the window lock button, no change.

Here's my workaround: If I hold the window button UP while IGN is on, and then turn the key off, the window will stay up.

Any ideas?
Thanks

I bet its the switch on the gate causing it...

Hi Rustbucket,

Rear window lock only affects console switch operation.
How window system works is explained here.

By no change, you mean window still rolls down when you key off even with topper bolt removed? Tried disconnecting the switch itself? (Location in pic below)

If it still does it... Most likely Reason is Blue and white wire between Pin 11 of relay and pin 2 (down) of tailgate key switch is dangling is shorting to ground somewhere. (L-W, in red rectangle in schematic below). I suggest you trace that wire down. I suspect the flex harness between body and tailgate.

Or Tailgate switch contact intermittent and switch is mechanically stuck in down position where a little shake or movement makes intermittent contact in down direction.

Electrical Demons most often found in power plants .

A young one may have been chased out!!

Been getting a lot of rain up there??

I am thinking it has to be in the window relay

If the cover Top Safety is open The motor circuit should not be able to complete.

Thinking this over Demons are still my first choice!!

Only left is break out The Homer and do some trouble shooting

Well that got a little weird

So now the workaround doesn't work no more. Window is down and there ain't no getting it back up.

RAD, I'll check the wire you indicated first opportunity. I do appreciate the helpful tips and personalized schematic!

Like I thought, the workaround sounded like a coincidence.

The console switch still works, right?

Now that it won't go back up either, I would also suspect the pins 10 and 11 section (tailgate switch) of the relay module. Basically:
(1) inspect all wires that go between that and the tailgate switch,
(2) The wire that goes from tailgate switch center contact back to top off switch,
(3) test pins 10 and 11 according to my rear "Window Control" post
(4) inspect relay and surrounding for moisture. Water could get in through the quarter vents if slats are worn out. I have a post on replacing the slats, too.

I have seen all different kinds of failures but never one where things go down by themselves.

So now the window is down for good??

Will not go back up if it is not inside jumper the motor to get it up.

Blue/white wire was the culprit. It was causing the motor to just run all the time -- it was hot too!

Thanks for the help guys.

Probably shorting to ground. That should run to one pin of the tail gate switch.

Yes, the wire coating was abraded through in 2 locations.

Cool you found it. Now I would trace it and the other 2 wires all the way to the tailgate switch to make sure that they are connected properly.
