should be by the blower motor, passenger side attached to the firewall. Pretty easy to replace.

Red face

I know on the 87 Trucks it is mounted on the heater box.

Should be pretty easy to see.

I think you need to remove the glove Box but I am not real sure.

Yes glove box comes out, when I got mine done I had my mechanic do it when he was doing my ac conversion pretty sure it's just the plug and a couple of screws. It was well worth it though my 2 low settings were gone and it was melting my face or trickling out just from the fresh air setting.

Once you dig in it will be pretty straight forward

Yeah, probably the resistor- inexpensive and very simple to replace. ON the 1986-1988 22R-E 4Runners, Location and test points (IF you need to troubleshoot) are on my post here.
Sorry, not sure if 89 is same as 88, but electrical concept should be the same.

related threadjack:

My fan (89 DLX 4Rnr) only works on high speed as well. Except "high" is a joke and feels more like the medium-low speed. Will swapping this resistor fix the lost speeds and bring my overall fan speed back up?

Most likely.

and bring my overall fan speed back up?
Maybe yes, maybe not. Problem could also be with your blower fan motor. However, just do it. (Replacement Resistor is inexpensive):
  • Take resistor out, inspect and and test it. Replace if found defective. A defective resistor (too high a resistance or poor connection) will cause slow fan speed, so replacing a bad one may also may fix your weak high speed issue.
  • Take out fan and clean it, check motor for binding.

Whatever you do, this is a good opportunity to understand that system. Once you have access to the suggested test points on my post ^^^, try them.

Hmmm... I paid $14.19 total for my 1986 4Runner, 22RE, DLX
maybe different for the 1986 trucks?
