exhaust smell

I have a 1987 toyota pickup with a 22r does this engine supposed to have a catatalytic convertor or not because my exhaust smells really strong it has a carb

yes , your truck from the factory was equipped with a catalytic convertor. you can get one that's not terribly expensive and it will cut down on the smell. maybe it went bad at one point and the PO took it off and ran a straight pipe through it

So the guy took it off thats probably why my exhaust smells so much

If your truck has a loud ticking sound on acceleration, it may be a bad exhaust manifold gasket.

It does tick so it probably does need one but the guy that had it before me cut the cat out and ran it straight to a flowmaster and out the back
