1986 4runner

so i broke an axle. going 70 down the interstate. (yeah i know i could hardly believe it could reach 70mph too)

my question is
1.) what is a good place to get a replacement axle shaft? new or used


2.) can i press on my old backing plate, wheel bearing etc. or are there components that i will defin. have to replace to get it put back on correctly

3.) how detailed is this? - any links to similar threads would be great!

You can reuse the backing plate, good time to get new axle bearings and seals on both sides...

kinda new question. ive read some conflicting info. want to know what years are interchangeable for the axle shaft on my '86. thanks

 

86-89 is a safe bet. The 84/85 rear axles were a little shorter I think. 90-95 axles may work too, not sure.

You may be able to find someone with an entire axle housing and just pull a side out. Heck, I think I even have one sitting around.

If you do the bearings make sure you have access to a press. I did it without and I would not do that again.

 

X2 on the press. I did one myself awhile back and plan on getting a shop to do it this time. Let me know if u have an axle sitting around. I needed one 2 weeks ago. Also in the middle of replacing the trans and almost done. Trying to get my baby on the road. Thanks guys for the help!

 

Yukon sells shafts with long splines. You take out your old shaft, measure it, and cut the new one to the same length. That way you don't have to worry about getting the right length ordered.

Plus they're a lot stronger than stock too.
