frame holes

Frame weld question about holes next to the rear crossmember and under ther rear passenger shock mount. I found two frame holes in hard to reach spots on the inner side of frame. And the gussets of the rear crossmember are cruddy.

Would you try small patches first, since rot is only on the inner face? Or cut off the crossmember and the shock mount to weld in big plates? If so, anybody have a crossmember or stock shock mount?
.
This is for a stock daily driver. The rest of the frame - outer, upper, and lower frame sides and mounts --are ok - surface rust but no holes.

just how have you checked the rest of the frame?

i use either a old screw driver or a small hammer and I just poke or pound away.

I have found these things tend to be much worse then first thought.

Once you start to weld it is so thin you just burn right through.

i know you can still buy the shock mounts new from Toyota.

If you can see you can weld it.

I would make a piece of 1/8" flat bent so it catches a few inches of the crossmember and frame.

What ever works for you.

I banged on the rest of the frame with a hammer and chisel. Some flaking but no other holes. This truck had hot oil undercoating a few times. That helped under the cab, but not enough in the bed.
Toyota has the right rear shock mount, it is 48506-35010 , but $75 and special order.
Like you say I expect a can of worms. Just hoping for a small can of worms.
