Hello everyone new to this form. Bought my first toyota today 1988 4x4 22re 170k For $400 and everything works!

Okay so here is the scoop, bought the truck because it runs and drives and I thought 400 bucks is pretty much scrap price but its dripping oil alot when the engine is running, spraying under the hood and leaves a nice black line in the front underneath the truck. My thought is timing cover gasket, So hard to tell because everything is covered in oil.

I'm new to these trucks so help is very much appreciated thanks!

 

Could be from anywhere, get some degreaser and get busy with a pressure washer only then will you see this crazy leak

 

Front crank seal is pretty notorious for failing on 22re's. You can replace it without removing the timing cover but the crank pulley has to come off. If the cover itself was leaking I don't think you'd see it sprayed on the hood.

 

Oil pump to timing cover o-ring is what was causing my oil everywhere. But I went ahead and put another crank seal while I was there.

 

I had that happen, the same as Fordless. I cleaned up what I could with a rag and then watched it while it was running. There was an oil trickle coming from the oil pump in front (it doesn't take much oil to make a big mess!).

I pulled the crank pulley and the oil pump and replaced the o-ring seal between the oil pump and timing cover as well as the crankshaft seal in the front of the oil pump. I'm not sure exactly which one it was but replacing them both fixed the leaking.
