I am getting a Safari snorkel for my '84. This mounts on the drivers side fender, as most of you know. But since I have a 3RZ, the intake points towards the passenger side.

How feasible is it to make a filter box for the driver side front fender area (like where a battery would be mounted) but plumb 3" tubing from the throttle body back over to the filter box? Basically my intake tube would have to do a 180 and cross back over the engine compartment.

Or could I run the tubing down and under the core support area then up into the filter box?

I'm just looking for ideas guys, lets hear what ya got. And since I have a MAF sensor, is that better to be mounted closer to the throttle body or is its location irrelevant?

RV sewage tube works great.....Its best if you buy a new one.....LOL

 

I have no air box now. Just a cone filter on the OE tube that comes off the throttle body. It does its job of filtering the intake air, I'm just want to get some cooler air, since the cone sits directly over the header. So it's always sucking warm/hot air from inside the engine compartment. And other than homemade, there is only a driver side snorkel option for my body style that I've been able to find.

Maybe 3" aluminum tubing that's mandrel bent to go from throttle body, do a 180* back towards driver side, and into an aluminum box that will house the filter and the snorkel tube from the fender?

I'm trying to think of how I can route RV PVC piping... Or is the sewage tubing flexible?

I'd say that, if you're talking about bending aluminum tube, you could go right on out that side?

It might be sweet to build a piece that comes all the way across the front of the engine the way that a stock 22re does... You might even be able to make something happen with one of those pieces.

There's also the possibility that you could find all the pieces of intake that you'd need from random cars around a junk yard. You might be able to come up with something that looks strangely like it's supposed to be there.

Or maybe you could use a Taco snorkle:

Thanks for all the replies and ideas folks. I will research BBPs snorkel tonight. I have looked at several different applications of snorkels, but none seemed to follow the windshield angle perfectly. But I will keep on checking. Thanks again.

yeah,

some cutting with a dremel and rust converter, rebuilt a lot with fiberglass since i lack sheet metal/welding skills. it was also in a spot with tons of angles.

looking pretty solid right now. i guess only time will tell......

Would love to resurect this thread. I am swapping in a 3rz into my 85 4Runner and I am wondering if a 60 series or taco snorkel will mount up flush on my passenger side?

 

1.)Spread some siran wrap over your A-pillar and down the fender

2.)Spray "GreatStuff" expanding foam over the area and let it build out to exceed the dimensions of what you want

3.)Once hardened, shape the foam with files, electric knives, rasps, ect to achieve the desired shape.

4.)Wrap with epoxy and fiberglass matting. Install a 3 inch metal collar in the top. Install 2.5-3 inch PVC pipe in the end that will enter the engine bay.

5.)Purchase snorkel head off of ebay

6.)Mount head to collar with self tapping screws.

7.)Plumb other end to airbox. I have a Ford Ranger 4cyl. box in my garage that is the right configuration for what I want to do. Take a day and go to the pick-n-pull and just look through various vehicles to find what works for you.

 

Yeah I don't want a DIY snorkel. Thanks anyways though. I'm willing to make a couple slight mods to make a model for a different truck work on mine but building a complete one is not what I'm trying to do.

 

A 60 series snorkel won't sit flush. The only one I have found is a somewhat generic one on eBay that is mounted on the passenger side fender.

I haven't done mine yet, and my 3RZ cracked the head a few weeks ago, but I figured I would just re-do my driver side of engine compartment and make room for a box for an air filter. Then just plumb it over the fan area and into the plenum. Then I could use the Safari or TJM snorkel, which mounts to the driver fender.
