Question 85 p/u 22re HARD to start HOT or COLD!

I recently got an 85 pickup SR5 4x4 22re project...My buddy and I have been working on it and so far we have changed the timing chain, guides, and tensioner, the o2 sensor, checked the valve clearances which are all good, all pistons have compression between 135-140, jumped the fuel pump relay to make sure the fuel pump works and it does, went up and down a gear on the distributor and that didn't help. One thing that I have noticed is that when we check the timing it runs like complete crap when set to 5* and thats about as retarded as we can get it so I run it advanced about 1/2-1/4 inch from the 12* so I can drive the thing without it being completely gutless. I've messed with the air/fuel screw countless times and the engine at idle seems to have a miss every so often. When revved up between 2000-3000 it runs fine. and runs fine with normal driving........does ANYONE have an idea of what could be going on? PLEASE HELP! I am out of ideas and have no idea what to do....Thanks!

The occasional miss at idle is prob a lean miss. Pretty normal fo high altitude vehicles, although I'm not sure at what altitude Reno is.

Reno is at about 4500ft...would that effect me that much? Is there a way to get that lean miss to be gone since I think it's one of the factors to why I'm failing smog. Any ideas for the starting issue?

I ran into the same problem today in reno I just read that the idle mix screw for an 85 is supposed to be backed out 4 to 4.5 turns we had the same problem with the miss and after the correct adjustment its smooth as silk and it starts much better have you changed the accelerator pump diaphragm mine had a small hole in it when i bought it and I had to crank and crank or give it a shot of starting fluid and now it starts like like an EFI.

Not too sure how much my screw is backed out I would have to go check...where is the accelerator pump diaphragm? Like you were saying how yours cranks and cranks thats exactly how mine is...I have to crank it for like 10 seconds till it starts firing and then a couple more seconds till its fully running.

Fuel injected(22RE) does not have an accelerator pump. And what screw are you turning to adjust mixture? I didn't catch the RE earlier, so in light of that, have you tested your O2 sensor? Fuel injected engines are, for the most part, ECU controlled mixture via changing the amount of fuel going in through the injectors. The O2 sensor "sniffs" the exhaust and tells the ECU when it's running to rich or lean, and the ECU adjust accordingly. Now someone else may be able to comment on the 22RE specific controls... My comments are general fuel injection guidelines...

Theres a screw on the right side of the engine (as you're looking at it) right below the throttle cable and dash pot. I changed my o2 sensor and since then have been getting a huge gain in mpg's which I think will help my smog issue. But now i'm battling this starting issue. Maybe my injectors are bad??? I'm a little baffled at this point...

Timing should be at 8*. Check your temp sender and your cold start injector. Something to think about.

@203cree will check those out and see if that works.
@Crtzlow no trouble codes at all...I read on marlin crawler to plug off my egr and see if that works? I also just jumped the fuel relay again and it started right up..I notice that when I don't jump it and turn the key I cant hear the fuel pump buzzing but when I jump it I do..whats tat mean?

Means your fuel pump relay is weak.

My 85 22RE fuel pump does not come on until you turn the key to start. The fuel pump is turned on by the air flow meter. It has a baffle (compensation plate) in it that engine vacuum pulls and turns the fuel pump on. FSM chapter 5, EFI system, page FI56 shows opertion and checks.
