Help With Determining If 22r Is A 84' or 85'?

Have an 85' Toyota but the guy i bought from had the motor swapped out because the old one needed rebuilding. Getting ready to change out the timing chain and have noted that i would need a different kit for an 84' versus an 85'. The guy i purchased the truck from doesn't know which the motor is but knows its one or the other as he did not do the motor work. Any help would be great. I can post a picture of the engine if needed. Thanks.

On my 86 Runner build I show the difference between the two timing chain covers. It is on the first 10 pages somewhere. I will post later pics later when I have access to a computer that I can show pics on. If I remember right the older style has the circles and the newer style has 6k on it.
Edit: The older style that I am refering to is the 22r and the newer style the 22re is the way to tell the difference on the post. It is on page 5 #105.

Going by your valve cover, I would say 85 and up, but the valve covers are interchangeable and it possible they got swapped around while changing motors. One of the better ways to check is to look at the timing covers and probably the easiest.
Dont have any pictures but another way is on the passenger side if it has a Knock Sensor ( just behind the oil filter) it is newer block(85) and No Knock Sensor, it is an older block(84).

I got my Timing Chain on and had to replace the Timing Cover due to it being worn. I tried to use a early model 22r and they wont interchange. Thought I would put some info up to help others identify what they may have.
84 and older. 22r has no dimples/circles and the number "2" on it. Twistedyota got it right on the height thing, see the last picture for a good example. I also tried to mark which bolt holes for removing the timing cover on down the road when I have to do a chain again. Hope it wont burn off but it if does I tried to come up with an easier way. Never can remember which bolts they are.

Yea thanks man i looked at the timing cover and it has the circles on it. Would you suggest changing the timing cover when i have the other work done? It just started ticking about 2 weeks ago.

I personally reuse my timing cover unless the chain gets loose and eats a whole into the water jacket. Usually it will rub and if I recall right, it will be at the lower left hand side looking at where the tracks are at.
If it just rubbed for a little bit and didnt get deep, I reuse them, but if it did rub, really make sure that it did not get a hole in it. A new cover can be had for $50 or so. If no damage, they are perfectly reusuable.

If this is the early engine most often the head will have pear shaped exhaust ports.
the early engines also had a domed piston compared to the late engine flat piston.:jessica:
The older engine had a double row timing chain. The water pumps on the older engine are different . I am not sure but I think the older one is thicker in the impeller.
I have seen the older engines with the newer electronics and valve covers as well.
84 was a changeover year and all the old style engines where used first.
