Cam gear snapped off

Hey everybody,

So I just bought a new 22RE engine from a local well known machinist. They also ship these engines all around the country.

So I got it home and installed.

I set the timing etc etc and started and was letting it warm up before I took it for a drive. As I was walking back to my house I started to hear a rattling noise, I started walking back and by the time I got there it had died. It wouldn't start again and didn't sound right.

So I pulled the valve cover off and the cam gear is snapped off.

It's just completely snapped.

So I need to know if this is something I did or just a freak case? Mostly so I have a better idea when I call the builder

Sounds like maybe the camshaft siezed up?

I really don't know. Best way to check?

It seems strange for this to happen because they put it on a engine stand and fired it up before I picked it up

if you got a complete long block and added the oil and antifreeze to it i would have to say this falls on the engine builder. like the previuos post it sounds like the cam shaft siezed up probly form the oil pump not being primed.
unless the bolt just came off the end of the camshaft. see if the camshft will spin at all visually check each cam jornal you might be able to see goulding on one of them. or pull the caps off you need to if the cam is broke anyways

Take the rocker assymbly off and try to turn the cam shaft or take the cam shaft caps off and see if there is any damage.

Is the bolt that holds the distro gear and chain gear broke or just fell out?

It's broke.

I will go take another look at it now that I have zen-ed out a bit. Saying I was a little nervous about my $1700 going down the toilet is taking it easy

Yeah if that cam shaft seized up you will see some scoring in the cam caps. If that is the case either the caps were torqued down way to much or lack of lube.

I still haven't taken the caps off yet. Will probably wait until I call the builder.

Here is a picture of the gear and all the shavings that are there. It looks like the cam was being pushed to the driver side by the fuel pump?

Yeah if that is like that I would just take it back to the builder to fix it.
