Why do you need two transfer cases?

ok so basically i bought my first toyota about a week ago. its an 85 pickup on 35s. it needs a lot of general repairs and well on top of that i have big plans for it. which brings me to this. every magazine i pick up that has an 85 yota in it they have on their list of modifications daul transfer cases. im lost on the fact of what this does for you. WHY DO YOU NEED TWO TRANSFER CASES. i really wanna know because apparently it sounds like it would make a world of difference wheelin. thanks for reading this completely ignorant post.

That is a really really dumb question!

But no, honestly, besides to search.

Basically with dual transfer cases you have the ability to double your low range... in laymans terms... you go from 4hi to 4Lo to 4lo-lo.

your 1st low case, reduces by say, 2.28 (stock 5speed) and then your second case reduces that 2.28 by a further 2.28. Effectively making your crawl ratio truly low, the benefit is that when you wheel, tire speed is your enemy, the slower the tire speed, the more traction, and the better ability to crawl over things. 4wheeling is not a race. Low and slow is the key!

i knew the basics of it but thanks that clarifys how it works a little bit better i meen i really wanna know how it works in depth tho like how it works mechanically and where everything goes if that makes sense i guess i worded my first question wrong

Have to get an adapter to join the 2 cases together, new skid plate, longer front driveshaft, shorter rear drive shaft, some minor internal work the the transfer case, minor cutting or bending to the existing shifter opening, and best of all Twin Sticks

Unless you are crazy rock crawling, the stock truck should get you most places.
Fix what is wrong, do a major tune up, change all fluids then look at intake, exhaust, armor, and lockers

okay so you ask why you need them.. think about this.. go out drive your truck, then, put it in 4low and drive it again, then, try to imagine putting it in 4low AGAIN. dual transer cases allow you to have such low gearing that you can crawl very slow and have a very high amount of torque and control over your rig instead of just doing a rev limiter clutch drop and bouncing up the trail. YOU do NOT need them. search. is your best bud. just read, a LOT. dual cases is one of the last things to be done to a rig..

I dont know if id go that far. Proper gearing for the conditions you wheel is important.

x2. I went 5.29's with my 32's. still gives me a super low range, I could only imagine what it would be like with a 4.7 dual case set up with my tiny tires and big tire gears.

ii remember reading this post from a guy that just went with dual cases and he said to take it from him > if he could go back and do it again, he would lowers gears first and then if necessary, go with duals.

i'm no pro, but this is the angle i am going with for more than one reason ($$$$)

How do you like that combo for daily driving? Just asking since I may have to go that route with the new tires. My 4:56's are ok so far.


OP. Dual cases just give you more options for low range on the trails. Like others have said you want less wheel spin and more control. When in the rocks you want to use as little throttle as you can.
