Why can't I find a e-brake cable that will work?

Why can't I find a e-brake cable that will work?

'93 Regular cab, 22re, 2wd, short bed.

Hi all, I need some help with what seems to be a common issue, finding the right parking brake cable. Mine snapped at the handle a while back so I went to Auto-Zone and ordered an a new one. But come to find out it must be the one for the extended cab because it was the better part of a couple feet to long. I made it work because I had to get an inspection that day, and came home and ordered a new one from Rockauto (Doorman #C660248). I mocked it in place, it looked like it was going to work but once I got it in it looks like it's about 3 inches to long.



And the adjuster is backed out all the way.



Should I just cut my losses and make this one work or is there something I'm missing?

Also am I correct in thinking that the adjuster arm is supposed to pivot on the intermediate arm?

Mine snapped at the handle too, and i couldn't find a new one anywhere. I know this sounds pretty redneck but I bought a length of bicycle brake cable long enough, and they come with that same metal end piece on them. Then underneath the truck you can just use U clamps or something to hold it on. For the amount that I actually use it (just park in gear) it works great.

best place i've found, is getting one off of a parts truck that is the same era as your vehicle.


one off of a 89 ext cab pickup was too long for my 86 ext cab pickup...and one for a 1st gen 4runner was too short.

i'm searching for one for my '92 4runner right now lol

you're not suppose to back the adjuster off to make the cable shorter, you need to go the other way with it and tighten it


soak those threads with some PB blaster for about an hour before you try though; it looks pretty oxidized

I have given up trying to get Ebrake cables from anybody but the dealer since I started that no problems.

A yard cable around here unless you watched the owner use the ebrake is junk this liquid brine is brutal on the underneath of the vehicles.

The funny thing about that is I'm actually a bicycle mechanic, and I used a cable knarp from a handlebar bag to make the first one work. I may just do that again, at least this time I won't have two extra feet of housing to deal with.

I think part of the problem was that the intermediate arm wasn't springing back far enough to take up the slack so every time I pushed in the handle, to get the light to go off, to cable would bind and kink weakening it till it eventually snapped.

And I'll crawl under there sometime this week and mess with the adjuster. But it seems to take up that much slack it is going to make my brakes rub. And the doesn't seem like the intermediate arm will even spring back any farther.

Also, from the OP, is the adjuster arm supposed to pivot on the intermediate arm? If so that is another problem I have to deal with.
