I personally run the BFG AT's, but if I were going for a mud tire, I have always loved the look of those wrangler duratracs - I also saw my first set of the general grabbers in person and those are a really eye catching tire, but I cant say anything on the performance of either one. Really depends on the terrain/style of driving to be done

I run Maxxis Bighorns in 255/85/16 flavor (33.5x10). They're one of the cheapest M/Ts you'll find (~$650 for 4 in my size), but they grip very well on the rocks and they're decent in snow too. Maxxis also makes Summit Mud Dawgs which are the exact same tire and even cheaper (~$550 for 4). Their only drawback is they are loud on the freeway, but that goes with all mud tires.

Not a mud tire, but I run Nitto Terra Grapplers (an A/T tire) in the 295/75/16 size, and I have not been more impressed by any other tire out there. Quiet, have excellent grip in most every condition, and I have put over 50,000 miles on mine and there's tread to spare! I also think they are one of the most aggressive looking A/T tires on the market. I got a steal on mine at $150 a tire.

+1 with Maxxis being a great tire for the money.

I got a great deal on a full set of REVO 2s last year. Pros: good running tires with excellant cornering as well as traction in both snow and rain. Con: soft sidewall, and if you hate picking up little rocks in your tires, run from these.

Look at the Sumitomo HRT Sport. My friend got some for his 4 runner in late 08. Great tire that cost him under $120 on sale. After 15,000 miles and no tire rotation, there is no visible wear. I think they are supposed to last 70,000 miles.

Also take a look at the Yoko Geolander...

I'm still running a set of Michelin Cross Terrains which I bought 102,000 miles ago.

They are a great tire, good road manners and not bad off road. I hunt back woods a lot and I've never been close to stuck.

They aren't cheap, but they last over 100,000 miles, so ...........do the math.

stock sized Michelin LTX-MS

they last a long time, nothing better in 80mph interstate highway rain puddles,
and gets me up to the cabin in the woods w/o much fuss. it is a road tire for sure, but
ok on everything except snow-coated babyheads on 4wd-only steeps. I need chains for that.

Im running 33X12.5 Goodyear MT/R's on 15X8 steelies with a 3" lift. The MT/R's are by far the best tire I have ever owned but they were pretty pricey...After mounting, balancing, and protection plan they were $300 each.

33x12.5x15 Goodyear Duratracs. I havent put but about 2500 miles on them so far but have had no trouble in rain on the highways and they are awesome in the mud. They do have a little road noise but as stated above what M/T doesent.

I'm planning on getting some 265/75/R16 Nitto Terra Grapplers, but I can't find them locally in load range D. Has anyone got away with running load range E on a 3rd gen?!

Some have, but mostly I hear they are way too harsh for a 4runner. Stick with C of D.
