94 4 runner.state inspection will let me go a total of 9 inches over stock to the bottom of my open door.this includes tire height too not just lift.this is my 1st time thru after the sas.they are telling me i can ony be at 29 inches but i think that is wrong.that would mean as stock it would have been 20 inches.how can i confirm this?where are they getting their info from?if i could prove it is actually higher than 20 stock it will help me a lot.

 

where are you from? check your states DMV website.

 

why not just ask them where they got their 20 inches from and show you in writing? If they cannot do that then that shop is not worth going to in the first place and find another shop.

I love idiot inspections shops who think they know everything. I always ask them to show me in the book if I don't agree with something. Had in issue with a place trying to fail our BMW because of an Airbag light that was on. Which is not even an inspection item and does not even need to be checked. Gave me an idiot excuse saying that they don't know for sure if the air bag will go off on its own. I was like what? Do you even know what it means when the light is on? It means that the system has been electronically disabled for whatever reason because it would be safer not to deploy the airbag lol. I asked them to show me in the book where it is checked an if not properly working it fails. 15 minutes later I walked out of the shop with inspection sticker on the car. lol.

 

My stock 99 4Runner Highlander is 21.5" to the bottom of the door so 20" seems plausible. Hopefully someone with a 94 will chime in for you.

i hear ya extreme, they failed my dads 99 crownvic, because the traction control light was on, wich means that the traction control was on!! they were trying to say the light was on because the traction control was broken...since when do they inspect your traction control system anyway??? who cares....

but as for ride height...im sorry i cant really help....

im 5'8, and the roof is at my eyeballs, if that helps any...its an 85p/u

Actually. If he's 5'8, then say his eye level is at about 5'6"..
5x12=72..
72+6=78
the top of the roof is 78" off the ground.
measure the thickness of the cab, subtract that number from 78..
what's the difference?
the st0ck height of the body from the ground.

it has a 1" AAL/tbar and 30's..
so it's about 1.5" over stock.

 

Well played. I would recommend looking in your owners manual. Back in the good ol' days (1987) there was a little picture with measurements like these.

 

Move to a new state that has no vehicle inspections.

Put on 28" for inspection.

Stock height at 20" sounds about right.

29" to the bottom of door is tall.

if 20" is accurate as stock height then he must have a 4" suspension lift and 38's?

38"-28" = 10" divide that by 2" = 5" add the 4" for suspension lift = 9" total lift.


or 4" suspension lift, 35's and a 1" body lift. which would be 9.5" of total lift. and figure in a little lower for added weight of some extra gear.

 

sorry i should have explained this a little more.
here in nj we have just done away with safety inspections.state inspection now only does emmissions.this seems like great news for lots of us in nj with big trucks but there is a catch.
nj has a "modified height"inspection which is done at only 3 or so facilities in the entire state.you have to make an appointment for this and you will usually miss at least a 1/2 day of work.this type of inspection is still in effect and you will have to pass the "stability"part of inspection as well as emmissions.you are issued 2 stickers one for stability for the modified height and one for safety as all vehicles are issued.
you also have to carry paperwork given to you by them at the inspection station ,in case you ever get pulled over."it happens often"
you have to stay on the good side of these guys because you have nowhere else to go to legally.
asking then where they get their height info from does not go over very well.(believe me i know!)
before the sas all i did was crank down the tortion bars and put the stock rear coils back in with a spacer on top.i also have a 3 in bodylift.
im running rancho 44044s in the front and i have a set that have no lift in them and this way i think i can get the front down enough.
the problem is the rear because i put the chevy 63 inchers in and although they lifted the back extremely high they dont have much of an arch to them.
i dont think ill find something easily to drop the back as far as i need.
if i could find in some literature or repar guide the actual height to the bottom of the door i could bring this to help prove my case.
i had a friend that had a really old full size jeep and he brought a manual stating that there was a facory heavy duty version produced that year.this version had heavier springs and larger tires from the factory.
inspection used these measurements instead of the ones they had.

 

I still think you have the legal right to know where their info comes from and they would have to prove you are over that limit. Not the other way around.

i just measured a stock 94 or so runner in the parking lot and it seemed to be 22 to 23 inches

 

while i was looking some stuff up for my hubs i had comer across this chart. its from 79-86, but i hope it helps, maybe your 4runner and an 86 may be somewhat similar ya knoww??
