2 Questions 85 4Runner - 1st about A/C, 2nd about Header

What's up everyone, I have two quick question to ask the community. I currently have an 85 4Runner and my first problem is the A/C. The current system on the truck is of course from 85 and the Freon used back then is against fed regulations (think its R12) and I need to change it over to accept R134 Freon. What kit or part swap would anyone recommend that I can do to fix this problem.

My second question is I currently have a rebuilt engine from 22reperformance and was wondering if I should get an aftermarket header for better flow and a little more power. I know the last owner but on a more free flowing exhaust but the header is still stock. I understand how headers work I just didn't know how much this particular engine would benefit from the modification.

I appreciate all the advice

I can't comment on the A/C, but in my experience with exhaust you should keep the stock manifold. It's already practically a header. Best way is 2" pipe to a high flow cat, then 2.25" out to a straight flow muffler and out. This will keep you from having that annoying tin can sound EVERY header makes, and you'll have better performance than stock. I wouldn't go aftermarket unless you crack the factory mani and can't find another one in a bone yard.

Everything I've read shows the aftermarket headers only have gains in very high RPM and no one drives a 22 like that anyway. I've had 10+ 22re's and my experience supports that. If anything I notice a loss in low end with a 4>1 header. Tri-Y feels the same as stock to me.

All in all not worth the money in my opinion.

First, you have to determine if there is any R12 still left in the system. If there is, you will have to take it to a certified A/C shop to have the R12 removed. If there is no R12 present,It is very easy to convert your A/C from R12 to R143A. They make fittings that will screw onto the existing R12 fittings that change them over to R143A fittings. The only thing you have to watch is the oil in the system. R134a systems require PAG oil. Drain the oil out of the compressor and add the correct amount of PAG oil. Pull a good vacuum on the system and recharge with R134A and you should be good to go.

R12 is still available and works better than 134a. You will need to take it to an A/C shop for your charge. No reason to dump the R12 for the 134a other than cost of the refrigerant or if you want to DIY.
That said, when I refurbished my '85 I converted over to 134a, I pulled all the components and flushed the evaporator, condenser and lines individually; I drained the compressor and replaced everything with new Orings. I used pag46 and about 21ounces of r134a. Almost 2years later I'm happy to still that've 37* at the vents...

I've had LC headers on a 86 22re. They are cool but gains are minimal and the next time around I put my money somewhere else. I would go with 2" then 2 1/4" further back...

Good luck...

Thanks

I figured that would be the issue with the headers. I appreciate the advice on the A/C as well, take it easy.
