rear axle bearing replacement

I am replacing my left rear axle bearing. (Started to sound like i had rocks rattling around in my rear brake drum it squeaks and you can feel a rough rotation when turned by hand.) I Just ordered the bearing, bearing retainer, axle o-ring and a new outer seal. Is there anything I am missing.

It is a 2000 SR5 with abs. I have read that you need a new abs exciter ring as most machine chop then off/ or they deform when removing.

I am going to try to do this myself as I have access to a press, bearing heater, torch and bearing separator. Any tips would be appreciated. (This will be a first time for me replacing an axle bearing.)

The only write up I could find on replacing them is here So if you know of any of hand, a link would be appreciated.

Thanks

i did my wheel bearing on my 93 a month ago. i had no press so i put a piece of plywood on the ground and rammed the end part of the axle shaft into the plywood with the brake parts still attached till the bearing came out

While this method can work it won't always work. The easy part is getting the bearing off, hard part is pressing it on. This is where a jig is used with a press. Ofcourse if you have the jig you can take the bearing off with it too.

To re-press on the bearing I found I could use a pipe flange that you can find at Lowes or Home Depot. It's 4 1/2" in diamter and the pipe opening is about 1 3/4" big. It's crude but effective, just gotta finesse the retainer and bearing to get it to press on straight (once its gotten started straight its like butter squishing it the rest of the way).

Basically you take the axle shaft, slide the flange down onto it with the raised portion toward the retainer.. Slide the axle shaft with flange thrugh the i dont know what u call it ... the cross brace on the press (two C-channel pieces you raise up n down on the press legs)

I've gotten one bearing off without damaging the brakes (backing plate etc) and have also destroyed a backing plate and brake hardware with a very stubborn bearing.

Gotta be extra careful not to damage the splines on the shafts as this is what your smacking onto the ground.

FYI a shop will charge $40 a shaft to dissasemble and re-assemble all your pats.. I've gone that route (before i had a press) so $80 if you bring them the parts.

Next time I replace bearings I'll be making a proper jig to remove them. The slamming on the ground method just sucks IME
