3vze wont start after head job

3vze wont start after head job
i can get my engine to start after getting a head job on my 4runner....all it does is back fire out the exhaust when i spray starter fluid in the engine?????
i put some downey headers on it during this process and i dont have my oxygen sensor hooked up. does it need that to run? i was going to wait to hook it up till i got my exhaust connected to my cat?
any help would be grand! this is beginning to haunt me in my dreams! lol jk

backfiring while it is trying to start. I believe this happens when the spark goes off when the exhaust valve is open. (timing 
) This happened to me after a HG job as well cause I accidentally turned the engine before I installed the rotor assembly. It sounds silly but things do happen. Also these engines are known for there timing belt slips after installation. So you can do what I did and tear it down to expose the cam sprocket marks and insure they both line up and that the timing marking is at "0" and that the rotor is facing the #1 in the cap.

man that would suck to have to drain the coolant again to take the top timing cover off.
the rotor still lines up when the crank is at tdc.... ill guess ill start withthe oxygen sensor
