The IFS rear is wider by at least 4" (may be more I forget) also the IFS Rear 3rd is available in a V-6 model that is stronger that the Solid 4cyl 3rds and the IFS 4cyl 3rds.

Hope that helps.

kewl thats what i was lookin for, im guessing thats 4 iches overall?...and he says their V-6 thirds already..i dunno have to investigate that one, dunno if their stock or if they were used for a SAS we shall see, and a solid axle rear third will fit in a IFS rear end right? so will the front too?

V6 thirds would fit in either housing.

The IFS housing is wider and a little stronger.

IFS rear is 3" wider in 86-95, thus the reason folks put 1.5" wheel spacers on when they do a SAS.

SFA front and rear diff are the same. IFS rear fits SFA front or rear and vice versa.

This is newbie stuff that you could have found in about 15 seconds with a search.

Read these two links in their entirety then post again

baha sry i was too excited to search plus i was leaving on my 2.5 hour drive to get em, but i got em now and im happy as a clam, im prolly just gonna use the 83 axle cuz it already has the traction bar brackets welded on, or if i take my time i can cut em off n put em on the IFS either way i guess... but heres the loot, Traction bars, leaf springs front and rear, 6 shocks, front shackles, and front and rear toy axles with 4:56 gears and all the bolts n goodies...also the rear springs have 5 leaves plus overload...? mine have 3 plus overload...so 2 AAL's? or aftermarket?? oh yeah all for 350

Up front I would run 48" rears or 51" rears
Out back I would run f150 or s10 springs. If you carry a lot of weight I would run 51" rears. They have less body roll in turns but don't flex as much.
Histeer would also be nice.

From: Nashville TN. I can help you if you're close BUT NOBODY CAN HELP YOU IF YOU DON'T FILL YOUR LOCATION IN!
IFS rears are 3" wider, and the brakes are noticably larger.

IF you wanted to keep a narrow wheel track... it's a compact truck after all why make it track like a fullsize?... Then to my knowledge you can put the V6 diff and the brakes off the IFS axle onto the narrower axle.

If the shafts are the same on either axle, I can't imagine length making it stronger...

gotchya, yeah im gonna use the 85 axle, its already got the traction bar mounts welded on, all i gotta do is make some for the frame, and i was wondering if from the pic you could tell if they were lift springs, the rear has 5 leaves + overload, mine have 3 + overload....and look considerably more arched than mine, but mine are in the shape of an S

The IFS rear is MUCH beefier than the older axle.

are those lift blocks on the front axles? if so i wouldnt drive with those on there lol not very safe. good luck with the sas take your time and do it right the first time also if your going to be running 32's or 33's those 4.56's should be alot nicer then the 4.10's your truck prob has now

That does look like a front axle with lift blocks to me.

its got a pinion shim on it, didint know if that there was factory but yeah i guess ur right, its like a 1 incher, and this isnt goin in for a WHILE, lmao this isnt an SAS thread, just showin off what i got on the cheap im gonna take my time n rebuild it right n get gears front n rear, then swap her in, but for now i can finally wheel again, i figured out their not 4.56's their 4.10's so the rear will match the front, kinda happy lmao

allright guys i finally got the swap done, but with alot of headache, i had already taken out the 3rd on the 85 rear axle cleaned it up made sure it was good and put it back in, then when i went to swap out rear ends (i wanted the 85 axle cuz the traction bar mounts are already welded on and had good springs on it ...) after getting my axle out and the 85 under there...IT DOESENT FIT the axle itself is shorter and the perches are closer together by like 3/8ths!??! so doing all this for no reason, i swap thirds AGAIN pull the springs off the 85 put em in the truck slide my rear-end back under there and bolt her up...so the reason for this rant is to inform people that a 85- rear axle DOES NOT FIT IN AN 86+ TRUCK!!!!!!!!
