Question 3VZE w/ 24v '92-'93 Camry heads-project posted/started here a while ago...can I do it

I remember reading a yr or so ago on this forum or another that a guy pulled his 3VZE to rebuild it and tried swapping the 24v heads from a 1992 or 1993 camry motor to get the +12 valves and +50 bhp. I know the camry V6 of that era has the same basic architecture, although of course the block is cast different to mount in a FWD car. Is it possible to do the swap? I ask because I noticed a tiny weep of coolant by my right rear cylinder while fabricating a mount for my slave cylinder after the mount bolt sheared off in the gearbox. (I used 1/8" steel bent 90 degrees and lots of dremeling to make it fit from one of the engine/tranny bolt holes to a long bolt double nutted to act as a shear pin, replacing the broken bolt. Time consuming, but easier than pulling the gearbox and drilling it from the inside out, then installing a thread-sert!)

Does anyone know if the guy doing the conversion ever finished, or if it is possible to do? I'd rather go this way as I get ~15 mpg in town and a WHOPPING 17mpg on the highway, and have to commute from Virginia Tech to Northern VA to go home to see my g/f at least 2x a month. I could always use the extra hp, not to mention better gas mileage that goes w/ a more efficient set of heads. Had heard he used the 3.4L intake manifold as well, but it's a project still in the planning stages as Sluggo Thu Mule, my stubborn but trustworthy beat up truck is my daily driver and I don't have a 2nd car to drive (yet) so I could rebuild the motor in more than one weekend.

Also, I've seen some people putting the supra turbo motor in a truck. Is there ANY possibility that the bolt pattern for the engine/tranny is the same for a V6 4WD gearbox as a supra, or would it require a homemade adapter plate? I know you can get a japanese 300hp supra turbo motor for ~$1500, so that could be an option if I can keep 4WD and bolt it to my stock gear box.

your best bet is a 3.4 swap honestly

I don't know if the guy ever finished it. If he has, he hasn't posted up here and told anyone about it. He seemed to know what he was talking about, as far as things matching up with the camry head. One issue he mentioned in the thread was the intake would be on the wrong side, since it is coming out of a front wheel drive mount, and being bolted on a RWD.

I'm not sure how the computer would like the Camry head, or if you'd just use the Camry computer, and swap over the sensors.

It is a really neat idea, but I'm not sure if it's possible/feasible to do. You'll be on your own if you do it, and will likely become world famous... at least Toyota world famous.lol

A 3.4 swap would be much easier, and you'd get the the same horsepower gains as the estimated camry head swap would give you, and likely higher torque, and better MPG..

the 7mgte would bolt up if you had the 22re using the 5m mounts. and you need a cressida oil pan and a few other things i can't remember off the top of my head. but if you have the 3vze i think your best bet for extra power is the 5vze

The 7mgte is the 2nd newest supra engine, correct? I thought the 1993-1998 chassis had a 2JZ in it. Also, forgive my toyota dumbness, but the 5VZE is the 3.4 Liter V6 24v motor that toyota replaced the 3vze with in trucks, correct?

I know it would be quite a project to get the camry heads to work. I like a challenge. That and I already put a centerforce clutch in my truck 40k ago, so I don't know if the 3.0 and the 3.4 use the same flywheel/clutch. Just thinking that if you're going to swap motors, you might as well make it interesting or super powerful. Of course, I don't think the V6 gear box can handle 800+ hp like some guys put through the stock supra auto boxes... so driveline failures might become an issue if I turned the wick up on the motor or went to a big, single turbo or something crazy like that.

I seem to remember the guy doing the head swap was planning on using the 3.4L intake manifold and injectors to solve the backwards intake issue from the FWD==>RWD conversion. I'm curious if he ever finished it.

I've built race cars from scratch (Formula SAE @ Virginia Tech 1995-1998) and from that experience, wisdom says to do a "simple" 3.4L swap as it's tried and true and has been done by plenty before me, definitely less headaches/potential problems albeit a bit more money.

here's a little info for ya on the m series motors.

the 5mge was produced from 82-86 in the mkII supra and 82-88.5 in the cressida

the 7mge ( naturally aspirated ) was introduced in 86'-92' in the supra mkIII and 89-92 in the cressida markII

the 7mgte ( turbo ) was produced from 87(or was it 88) -93 in the supra mkIII.

in 91' the 2jz was put in the toyota aristo, but was put in the supra markIV from 93-02

oh and yes the 5vze is the 3.4 that replaced the 3vze in trucks and 4runners and was introduced in 95.5 i think?

you could try swapping the whole 3vz-fe motor and ecu maybe? then put the 5vz-fe manifold on. idk how the mounts and bellhousing would work out but i remember that guy was having a problem getting the timing belt to fit. plus a 24v system would confuse the hell out of a 3vze computer, that would require re-mapping right?

I think this is the thread you are thinking of:

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...rebuild-35794/

Doesn't look like it was ever finished. I would like to see someone do it though.
