Tailgate arms driving me crazy

Im bored at work and have a burning question. It burns when I question?

Has anyone replaced the little bumper things that are supposed to keep the tailgate support arms from flopping around? All I hear is "clack clack clack clack" when I go around a corner or hit a bump. Its driving me nuts.

i have an 87 runner that i replace the tailgate bump stops on but i think what your looking for i a little plastic washer type thing that goes between the bolt to hold the tailgate are in place and it keeps them from making noise, i think there is a thread on here but i believe you can only get them from the dealer

Yep, they're only a couple bucks from the dealer. A solution I've used several times is to zip tie a piece of foam to the arms, only a 1/2" x 1/2" square that's maybe 1/4" thick, and it stops them from moving around just fine. I had to do that on one side- it was driving me crazy until I got the parts. LOL.

I have been using zip ties for years to keep mine from rattling. I just put a zip tie around ONE of the arms on each side. The natural bend of the zip tie will put slight pressure on the other arm and that keeps them from rattling.

Anyone ever swap the arms out for a cable setup? Mine rattle like crazy, they drowned out my roll bar rattle.

Some good ideas! I searched after I posted this (imagine that) and found a thread where someone replaced the arms with cables, but could not find ones that were the exact same length, only slightly longer. So he put em on and now his tail gate swings lower than before. I think Im gonna go get some new ones from the dealer though.

I have the same rattle noise on my 86 4Runner because one of the plastic clips is broken. When i was at pic n pull a couple of weeks ago i pulled some of those plastic clips from a 91 4Runner, there a little bit diferent but should work the same as the original ones.

just make your own cable ones?????

i've seen a set a guy made, he used some aircraft grade wire (about 1/4" diameter) and had a machine guy put some ends on em..worked like a charm lol

I just stuck some thock washers on the bed side, and the tailgate side, they took up the "wollered" out space up, and too up a lot of the slack.

A friend of mine used some(cables) out of a 02 tacoma. They are a bit longer and his tailgate isn't level, but it doesn't bother him. I bought some cables for a chevy (that were shorter than the tacoma cables) that I got from advanced auto. My tailgate is level with NO rattle!

theres like a thin type of styrophome thing that my headphones for my yukon came in. u just took little sections of that, folded them up, and taked them on and rapped tape all over the arm to keep then in place. work like a charm.
