Interested??, 5VZ turbo kit??

Just wondering if anyone here would be interested in a turbo kit for the 5vz 4Runners and Tacomas ?. My shop specializes in custom exhausts, engine swaps and turbo systems. We mostly work with Supras, 240sx's, and 1jz powered Toyota P/U's!!! We have built quite a few custom kits already and have an off the shelf kit available for the 1JZ and 2JZ engines. The shop car is making 450+ HP and running 12.1's in the 1/4 mile..... and currenlty building a 650 HP 2jz swapped MK3 Supra.

Anyways, to the point. I always thought that my 4Runner could use more power, supercharging is an option, but I love the TQ and power delivery of a turbo. So it got me thinking of building a custom kit for my truck, and scince this is what we do every day here at the shop, thought that we could make jigs off the parts and make more kits available to the public.

The goal would be to make a quality quick spooling single turbo kit, capable of making 300-350 HP. It would be a complete bolt on kit including all the parts needed, minus the fuel and engine management upgrades (URD kit would be perfect). We would try to keep it below $3000. All parts would be Stainless steel and fabbed here in shop (NO China parts!!)

So who would be seriously interested in purchasing one. We would need to have at least 3-5 kits to make it worth while to produce.

The attachments arent working so,
Here is a few pics of some custom manifold and turbo systems we have designed and made:

its a wicked cool idea. the trd supercharger just seems more user friendly, with less work. heres a 5vz turbo tho. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/t...5vz-fe-114816/

I am somewhat interested. Not prepared to commit to anything. What would be included in the kit? My primary motivation is a little for power, but also for economy. Have you guys done a lot with smaller amounts of boost to increase drivability and economy vs large power gains?

Anyone else??

dannomite: We have done some lower boost projects, normally between 10-15 psi, but the 5VZ system should be running 5-8 psi maybe a bit more once intercooled.

I would definetly be interested if the price is less then the stated $3g's. I too am also concerned about reliability. That's why i haven't done anything to my engine minus the air filter. I had bought the supercharger but sold it 3 months later without installing it because i was that worried about it being my daily driver for now.

bump bump...

not in the short term but probably within the next year I will be shopping hard for a good turbo setup, a kit might be just the extra to push me over the decision; PM me if you still have any thoughts of building any kits for the little 5vz

thanks

I wanted to stay with the SC just for the simple fact it has some great low end capabilites for offroad but will likely put mine in my 4runner as it is my rock crawler. my tacoma is my DD rig and spends 99% of it's life on the road back and forth to work and have made the decision to go turbocharged, still in the early stages though of doing my homework.

Shopping for a good turbo exhaust w/ external wastegate and possibly a pre-fabbed intake manifold setup as I don't have great access to fabrication at this point.
going to make a good balance of quick spool and decent high end/peak power as I like to scoot and the SC is just not doing it for me anymore LOL. nice to drive but want more... thanks again, I know this thread is kinda old at this point...

It seems to me that the super charger would just be a better setup for an offroad truck.
But you never know, might find alot of people that would want one, i just think it would be hard to compete with the trd sc.

SC has it's advantage in the low RPM range but the t3/t4 turbo for example can push something like 350-400hp plus that in torque, oodles more torque than the SC; the tradeoff is that the turbo won't start making optimum boost until over 2500 rpm but the SC doesn't have much below that either; plus in my truck i do a lot more "backroad racing" style driving than crawling; plus you still have a good solid 200 hp at least when the turbo isn't spooled up; plenty for crawling.

anyway, was shopping for an exhaust manifold that was of high quality, that's how I came accross this thread; PSI has some good reviews and will do a nice custom setup for about $1k.

I also have given some thought to URD's Rotrex SC, it claims 400rwhp on the 4.0 V6 in the new tacos; probably need a custom intake manifold to use it. it reaches near peak boost well under 2000rpm! pretty impressive...

TRD's units are super easy to install and do have impressive ability with appropriate fuel mods though; that's why I started with this setup but now I'm addicted and want more boost

I am still thinking about doing this, just been working on other projects...put a new BW turbo on my Supra and made 605 HP and 550 TQ!!. Also working on a custom turbo system for a 240SX, SR20, GT2871 turbo with the slick Tial V band turbine housings.Once things settle down here at the shop I may start on the prototype on my truck.
