I spent the last few days making trips with a 4 1/2 X 8 1/2 trailer to get granite cobbles and small boulders (60-75 lbs). The kicker is that I had to drive out into the field, through soy beans (up to the hood), then out into the rock field. Made the mistake of loading (safe weight) the trailer first, then backing up to get out (after this, I backed up and turned around first). Since I have a 5spd, I had to ride the clutch a bit in order to not go crashing through this rock field with a loaded trailer. It smelled like something was burning big time. The remaining times were not nearly as bad, and she seems to be working just fine.

In fact, on the way home from my last haul today, she turned 159,000 miles old!

Is the clutch going to be OK? Good thing I didn't trade her in on the cash for a clunker. She may clunk with the best of them, but no way I would have done this with a car.

You may have burned the clutch a little, which puts wear on it, but as long as it is not slipping then it is still ok. I burned the clutch in my Daihatsu Rocky trying to pull out into traffic off of a steep hill (a high revving small engine in a 4x4 is a bad combo). It smelled like burning brakes with a more metallic smell. I drove it for a while after that and it was still working fine when I sold it.

I usually put my truck in 4 low with the hubs unlocked when I need to move around a big load or start on a steep hill. That way I do not have to slip the clutch as much.

 

Yep, low range is your (and your clutch's) friend!
