Ok so i've read post about replacing the head bolts anytime you take off the head. I'm also hearing from Todd from Engbldr that it is not required on the 22re if they are in good shape, but you have to on the 3.0 every time.
Any advice hoping to start putting her back together next week and would like some suggestion from the experts. Thanks guys

 

Look at it this way: the $30 for head bolts will be worth it when you realise that if you re-use the old ones and you have problems, you'll have to tear everything apart again to redo the head.

 

ya true might be worth the $$. that's what i was thinking but work is slow and my budget is already down the toilet.. But why skimp on that good point. Bolts looked real good too. What's up with #8 thought it was hell to get off. I read a few post where #8 was mentioned as being real tuff sometime even breaks.

If memory serves, the headbolts on a 3.0 are Torque To Yield, which means that when they're torqued, they actually stretch.

When you re-use headbolts, they won't stretch and won't give you the proper clamping force.

CAN you reuse TTY head bolts? Sure! Will they work? Maybe, maybe not - all depends on the tolerance stackup of your particular engine.

I agree with the comment above - is it worth the risk? No.

 

The 22RE head bolts are are not listed as "single use" parts in my 1990 FSM. I'd be confident re-using them as long as they were in decent shape (no rust).

 

From what I've gathered, reusing non-TTY bolts is fine if they are in good condition. Preparation and torquing procedure seem to matter more than how old the bolts are. Read the quote from engnbldr in this post: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116.../#post51056320

If some tightening/loosening is required to help smooth out imperfections in the threads, perhaps using virgin bolts without working them in a bit as Ted describes could be worse for maintaining tension than older ones that are broken in.

 

If I remember correctly, the dealer also considers the fuel filter a lifetime part. But should it be done?

 

Depends on mileage. I did mine at 130,000 (due to leak elsewhere, 3.0 vz) and noticed a significant difference.
