solid

i have a 85 Toyota truck. i want to know what is a solid axle? does it help with every day driving? and help you get more flex when you are out in the back woods? i have a 3" lift on 33x12.5x15 thornbirds. everyone tells me they suck. but when im out four wheeling they do great.

the main question is. what kind of axle should i put under my truck for a solid axle switch? is there a site that can help me? or tell me what i can do for this? maybe a DVD? will i need tools and a welder? or does it snap onto the existing frame? will i need a new frame?

thnak you guys.

Go to the front of your truck, And look under.

Should have something like that..
Minus the top gusset.

You dont need a solid axle swap.. (wow didnt think I would ever say that to someone with a SA)

yep my dear you have a solid axle. A top gusset is to strengthen the axle tubing. Ya see the big old round thing with two tubes coming from the left and right, well the one on the drivers side has a gusset on the top of the tube.

There are two types of Toyota front ends. One is IFS (independent front suspension AKA inferior front suspension) it looks like this

Then there is a solid axle or straight axle

See the difference?

The straight axle is better for wheelin because it can easily be made strong and it out-performes ifs in most cases. (ifs is better for desert/baha/rally type wheeling)

Moved to Newbie Tech Section.

I think it's amazing how different the reception is for a woman asking that type of question versus a guy.
Glad to see there is no flaming going on.

Solid axles rely on the entire axle articulating when flexed.
IFS relies on each wheel being able move freely of one another.

Solid axles will give better off-road performance but generally worse on-road ride comfort.
On most Toyota boards - solid axles rule.

Welcome to YT.

Agreed.
Maybe it should be, "on most Toyota boards solid axles rule."

I'll make the appropriate changes.
