To whomever has done the job before. How nervewracking was it to tighten the head bolts to 180 degrees past the initial torque??

Every ounce of my soul was telling me to stop torquing but you have to keep cranking. Holy crap, no wonder you need to replace the head bolts. I've stripped bolts/tapped holes with much less torque in the past.

Anyway, just had to see who else felt like they were violating some visceral law while cranking to all holy hell on those bad boys....and I only have one side done so far !

wasn't too bad, marked the bolts with a sharpie (a little dot), then turned them until the mark was on the other side - also paid close attention to the wrench.

 

I was wondering first time I did it; felt like something would go at any second!

I found it works much easier if you PB Blaster the bolts holes thoroughly & let it sit overnight, then vacuum or blow them out WELL with compressed air. Then torque them to the 33 ft/lbs, then the quarter turn, then back them all the way out, and start over again, then finish up. I actually torqued mine @ 10% FURTHER than the 1/2 turn with no ill effects.

 

Have done it, about to do it again to replace the exhaust valves and seats I shoulda replaced when I had the heads off. It didn't particularly scare me to hear the "chirps" as the bolts were getting towards full torque. I trust Toyotas' judgment on such things. You are putting the recommended drop o' motor oil on those bolts right?

Worried about stripping the bolts or the threads in the block? No sir, those are metric grade 10.9(~SAE grade 8) bolts and the block is cast iron. I don't think you'll even come close.

 

Didn't seem too bad for me, but I had a pretty big wrench on it. A small breaker bar might help.

 

i done many hg swaps most of every time i see some do they never chase the thread with bottoming tap witch is no no i find

i found out that arp do make cut to leatght studs for the truck i gonna use thous when i do my hg replacement

 

No kiddin'?! Are they for a 3VZE? And if so how much, and where do I get 'em?

DOA racing wants $345 for theirs. YIPE!!!! I ain't prepared to spend that on some stupid studs!

 

my head bolts didn't really resist the final 180 degrees, mine felt like they could have been tightened further.
