Question Are recovery hooks ok?

I know heavy duty shackles are probably better...but are hooks bad for recovery purposes?

I do not run with my tow package in place, so these would be mounting to the frame somehow.

Any words of wisdom?

I can get these Pro Comp hooks for $10:

IMHO Shackles are much safer and much better, if nothing else for the peace of mind in knowing that the strap isn't going to slide off, regardless of the angle. If you don't have the capability to mount a shackle, then hooks are better than nothing... Try a Warn receiver mounted shackle... I used one on my 4Runner for several years w/ great success.

Seen them break.. Some are good, some are really just for looks.. I would never go with chrome though.. Chrome weekens the steel

There are some old threads here on these type of hooks, and how to/not to mount them.
Personally I don't like an open hook like that, as something could slip off of it.

If I was going to bolt on something to the rig somewhere, it would be a closed ring device such as this.

This site has 'em.

One reason my tow package is still on is that I can use the shackle receiver in the back.
Plus I have the two shackles up front on the ARB.
If I ever get a custom rear bumper made, it will have two shackles welded in place on the back of it.

Good point. I just used the pic as an example - I probably wouldn't go with chrome even if it was strong.

Sounds like D rings are the way to go.

BTW guys, the receiver mount is not an option. I leave my tow package off unless I need it for towing (which I never do).

Just an FYI, the bolt spacing on basic hooks like that are the same as those of the tie-down points on both the front and rear of the frame. You could take off the front and rear tie-downs and add hooks. The ones in the front are actually reinforced, and you would need to get longer metric bolts to add a hook in place of the tie-down. Should be a similar situation in the rear...

How so? I can't imaging chrome is used throughout the hook to make it shiny so it must be a plating process. Chrome plating is just that, a plating process. It doesn't change the material properties of the underlying steel. That's like saying spray painting weakens the hook. BTW, the company I work for is basically a plating company.

Don't do it man!!! Sure, it starts out easy enough - "just a chrome tow hook" you say, but next thing you know your going to have chrome oil pans, and differential covers, and chrome this and chrome that.

I'm going for the transparent diff covers, myself.
