edit: any suggestions on a rivet gun? cheap yet, effective. is there different sizes? i've never used one before.

 

I did this mod for alot cheaper and show you how step by step. Very easy to do and you even use OEM Toyota parts (all be it from a 90's Land Crusier) so worse case you can get a replacement part! I have these and helped find Redline in Michigan a willing 3rd gen to get it tested on.

Sure beats a prop rod. I got stabbed in the back by the hood latch on my 2nd gen when it fell on me once. I normally don't swear much but the whole neighborhood heard that one.

Yes it can be done less expensively.

 

One issue I see with using rivets is on the rare occasion that the hood lift strut needs to be replaced. I just did that on my wife's Jeep GC, which uses the pop on socket style struts. Wouldn't it be easier in the long run to use bolts instead of rivets in case the hood struts fail?

 

This is a good point but remember the struts I used were from a Land Crusier rear hatch. A mid 90's LC rear lift gate weighs like twice as much as the 4runner hood. I used a single lift for almost a year before I found another lift so I would have two. Trust me on this, there is so much lift power in these struts I normally hold the hood as it goes up so it doesn't go up so fast. You should not ever have to worry about replacement. But here is the deal on that, if you use the rivets I described and show in my writeup, simply drill the rivet head off, save the removed rivet bushing or make another as I described in my write up, remove the one 12mm bolt from the fender location, replace with another strut pop rivet back and you are good to go. Another thing to remember, I used struts from a 1995 LC, that means when I put them on they were already 12 years old and I have been using them since and they both still have PLENTY of lifting power.
