Got speedo wobble?? Check this first!

Had classic speedometer "bouncing/wobble" all around the clock. Did a search to see what the most common culprits would be (cable, speedo gear, cable lube) and decided to start with what I thought was the easiest, the speedo cable. Disconnected both ends, didn't see anything but an old speedo cable, 'til I pull back the protective sheathing that Toyota put where the cable would normally come in contact with something else. Found this:


Must've trapped moisture BIG TIME! Rusted through so bad I couldn't believe the speedo worked at all!
My suggestion: if you have "the wobble," look down the cable while still in place and pull back the foreskin (pun intended). It may give you an easy answer as to where to start.

I've looked in my manual for the speedo cable and couldnt find anything. I need a new manual.

Where do you disconnect the cable from the wheel?

Daave, your cable is connected at the back of your guage cluster, and at the side of the transfer case.

My mistake, I thought you were talking about the wobble that comes from the mid-section I get when I wear a speedo.

Sorry for the late response, but the speedo thing had me barfing this morning!

Seriously, mine is a 2wd, so it goes directly to the tranny, but it just screws on to the housing like a garden hose. The connection behind the gauge cluster popped on, have to squeeze/pinch to get it off the back. For ~$20 at Napa, I'm very glad I just swapped it out. While getting behind the gauge cluster isn't difficult, per se, it's not something I wanna do more than once if I don't have to. Speedo is smooth as silk now, and the cruise control works flawlessly. Again, for the ease and relative inexpensiveness of the swap once you've gotten into the dash, I'd recommend just getting a new one.
