Transfer case overfilled with oil or ATF

Just got another 4runner ('99) and took it to the mechanics to check it out. Before I left I asked if they had checked the gear oil levels in the Tcase and diffs. Front diff was low and leaking out of the CV, rear was fine, Tcase started spewing oil out the fill hole. I would say anywhere from 1qt-2qt (that is what the mechanic said as well)

It did not look red at all or extremely dirty (not black at all), but not super clean, to be expected.

We checked the ATF level and it was a little low, but not much and the mechanic didn't seem to think it was low from leaking into the Tcase. I also checked it when I bought it and the ATF was not foamy and nice and red.

Is there any other explanation for this happening or does it absolutely mean the seal from the tranny to transfer case is leaking?

Is this a big deal? The mechanic said that it would only let ATF into the Tcase and not the other way around. Do I need to worry about my transmission?

This is the only thread I could find on a situation like mine, so just want to get some other opinions:

As always thanks for all the info. I am usually more of a lurker, but this new car is giving me fits.

FJ62 Tcases and 4Runner Tcases are setup completely different. The Cruiser case is built on the back of the trans, and the only thing keeping the two from mixing is a small seal. The 4Runner trans is bolted to the back of the trans and while its not impossible to leak into each other, its very unlikely. Two seals (one on the trans, one on the case) prevent the two from mixing. Not to mention it would need to fill the cavity between the trans and case before it could begin to fill the case.

In all likelyhood someone just overfilled the Tcase. Make sure your levels are perfect, and just drive it. Monitor it in a month or two, and see if there have been any changes.

Thanks for the quick reply. I just can't picture how the transfer case can get overfilled like that.

Red face

Most times gear boxes are filled cold .

When the gear oil gets hot it expands like most other fluids.

I doubt very much it was as much as they think we have a saying a mouthful of warm oil looks like a quart.

Unless it was captured in a container and measured.

Just keep an eye on it as Death Cougar has advised.
