'90 'Runner, 2wd. Am running the stock cookie cutters, thus allowing me to keep the spare in it's original location in front of the rear bumper. While doing other projects, went to take down the original spare and realized that I don't have any of the Toyota tools used to "crank" it down. What hardware am I missing to get this thing down the way it was intended??? I don't have the original owner's manual, either.

There is a long rod with a semi closed end that you use to lower the carrier (if trucks and runners are the same). You're best bet would be to go to a junk yard and look in the Yota's there. I'm willing to bet that some still have the rod in them. In the extended cab trucks they are located under the back deck mounted on two small clips. I don't know where they are in the runners.

I'm having the same problem. You link two rods together and go thru a hole in the back to "turn" the spare down. Mine is so rusted that i have ruined the two rods and the spare is still on there.

ANY IDEAS???

on my old truck it was seized. 2 days of PB blaster, liquid wrench, wd-40, deep creep, etc. and I still ended up just bending the rod more and more. Finally tried to use heat to un seize it with no luck, so I just threw in the towel and torched the chain. Always meant to get one from a junkyard but never got around to it.

 

My hanger is also stuck, but seeing that it's the cable type I should be able to get the spare (which is no good) down. If you have the "chain" type you should think about getting the "cable" type instead.

 

Would you prefer "outdoor parts warehouse"?

 

There it is, under the rear seats! Gonna hit the mechanism with some penetrant ahead of time. Much thanks!
