I would like to put a cruise contol on my 1994 Toyota truck (22re 5sp.). It did not have one stock, where can I buy such an item???

 

Audiovox makes an aftermarket unit, it's about $100. I have one but haven't installed it yet. If your truck has a VSS (velocity sensor), it's an easy hook-up, otherwise you have to put a magnet on the driveshaft etc etc

 

Do you now where I can purchase this online? How can I tell if my truck has the sensor?

On the trucks with mechanical speedos, the VSS is typically on the back of the speedometer and is usually only installed on trucks w/ cruise control. You can use the ignition/tach wire or install megnets on the driveshaft.

when I installed mine, all you had to hook up was the tach wire to the coil and the brake wire.

Pretty easy really. That is if you have the manual tranny.

 

Only unit "made for your truck" will be to pull one from a donor truck in a junkyard. You'll need all the parts, wiring, connectors, VSS, servo, etc. I think it is probably much easier to install the aftermarket/universal unit. Plus the stock CC is pretty poor, no adjustments, no coast mode, etc. The Audiovox has about 4 sensitivity settings and is very adjustable and can be fine-tuned to the vehicle and engine.

 

I installed an audiovox unit on a vehicle years ago, and it required A little bit of bracket making, but it worked great right out of the box with no major stuff needed.

 

I just ripped one off my 85 ext cab that I bought...it was a wiring nightmare this aftermarket cruise control.

 

Or you could hook up a control cable to the throttle linkage and "lock" it in place. Very dangerous, but total cost involved about $20

 

You can also pick up a brick from the local hardware store for less than $5.

 

94 is Gen3 truck... not as familiar with them.

My 89 Ge1 4Runner had a VSS even though it did not come with cruise.
The TWO different aftermarkte cruise that I used worked better witht he VSS connected (T tape 3M Scotch splice into the harness)

I perfer the "stepper motor" type over the Vac res type - esp if cruising aat higher highway speeds out West (where there isnt enough vac to run the cruise)

Installing an OEM one is a real PITA as its integerated into the harness and steering column.
