Hey guys,

My 4Runner had an annoying little exhaust leak, so I decided to fix it the other day. Found another manifold, cleaned it, had it planed, fixed/helicoiled the studs in the head, got a new gasket and flange gasket donuts, and bolted it all down. Still leaked, but it was a completely different tone. Just a side note I was torqueing down the 14mm nuts from the center out with very gradually increasing torque (probably 5 or 6 runs, finishing at maybe 35 ft-lb or torque)

So yesterday I tried it again, reused the old gasket (had only driven like 10 miles with it) and it's the same story. The surface of the head may very well be a little warped and maybe that's why I'm having no luck.

For a final try here's my idea: take it all off again, get a NEW gasket and NEW flange gaskets and coat the gasket on either side with some sort of high-temp sealant like Ultra Copper Permatex.

I'd like to get some opinions on this project...

I assume machining heads is beyond the realm of 'what I want to do right now'?

 

I seriously doubt any sealer, even the Permatex will hold up to the heat and pressure. If resurfacing the head surface isn't an option right now, on a budget I would be tempted to possibly used two gaskets and double them up.

 

and have you gona after it with the wetstone trick, granted if its leaking its probably more than you'd ever get like that, but worth a shot, for the effort, course thats probably harder to do in the truck. lol.

I used that permatex ultra copper on my downey headers and it held up fine. when I took the headers off two years later when I parted out the truck the permatex was still in excellent shape, actually still holding the headers on tight after i took the bolts out. the permatex wasn't dried out or burnt, still could peel it off (rubbery...)

 

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but your gloves......uh, they don't match.

I just used the Ultra Copper Permatex on my header that was leaking like you wouldn't believe. So far it has been 2 weeks and all is quiet. I put a layer on the head, then gasket (toyota), another layer and finally the header. I also used it on the 3 EGR tube connections.

 

Sweet! Well I'll try that stuff then!
