Camshafts not aligned?

Am trying to finish up after replacing my blown HG's on my 3.0. When I was about to check valve clearance with the crank set at 0TDC I noticed that the two timing marks on the camshafts don't line up with each other or with the mark on the crank pulley. The driver side cam has the timing mark pointing straight up, while the pass. side points toward the outside of the engine bay. Should they both line up at the 12 o'clock position? I'll attach some pics. Thanks for any help

Without the belt, they won't stay at the 12 o'clock position. Because of the shape of the lobes, the cam will likely flop over when you remove the belt. You don't need to worry about lining them up until you are putting on the belt.

Thanks ChickenLover! You've saved me from some un-needed re-bolting.

Both will be straight up 12 oclock. The pass side cam will want to go right to straight up, while the drivers side will go there, but with vavle spring p ressure. Once you get the tin on, you will see the marks. Dont forget, each cam gear goes on different, drivers side is flipped so the flange is out, pass side, flange is in.

mdt - why are the gears flip flopped like that to maintain timing belt alignment?

Stronger and faster than ever before. The passing gear is GREAT! 40 TO 60 in 7 seconds is a blast. Driving it around is even more fun than when it was stock. 0-60 is faster than any of the diesel swaps out there whose videos ive watched; just a hair over 11 seconds where stock trim had it doing it in 13.5 seconds or so.

There is NO pinging at all even at 13*btdc. I think im going to up the timing again to 15* and see how it runs. The oil leaks I had before are gone.

The few things that ARE bugging me are:

1. Low compression in #1 cyl (110 psi)
2. Check Valve clearances (could be causing #1)
3. TPS circuit fault
4. Leaking radiator
5. Squeeking alternator belt

Engine wire brackets

Can anyone tell me how to attach the engine wire brackets to the valve covers? do they go between the cylinder head and the cover or on top of the cover? I can't find a good picture of them in the fsm and I can't recall how they were before I took them off.

Dude, they HAVE to go on TOP of the cover! It would leak if you put it between the head and the valve cover!

Mine were the other way around when I pulled the timing cover off, passenger side was flange was out. Does it matter?
