Two technicians are discussing testing of a "Cold start injector" on a 91 3.0L V6 4-Runner.

Technician A says, "After disabling the Ignition system, removing the Cold Start Injector from the Intake Manifold prior to a cold start, can be done to visually inspect the spray pattern of the injector".

Technician B says, "The Cold Start Injector's Nozzle can NOT be cleaned and the Cold Start Injector would need to be replaced, in the event of diagnosing a restricted nozzle."

Which is correct?


*Jay's Answer* = A only.

Visually inspecting the spray pattern, using a plastic bag or a jar, can yield clues to a "cold start problem". Since this cold start injector only operates when it is cold, performing this first thing in the morning is the best way to be sure the injector is suppose to be operational.

In the event the injector spray pattern is fully/partially restricted, spraying carb cleaner on it can help restore the original performance. Typically this injector just gets restricted exteranlly, by carbon deposits in the intake system covering the nozzles holes.

I had to go with B Jay.
Reason is Doxon Toyota replaced mine back in Oct. or Nov. of 2000.

It had been acting up on me since I bought the rig Oct. of '98.
It got so bad though they kept it overnight, and sure enough it performed for them next morning by refusing to start.

Ran me about $150 I think which included the labor.
Now if they could have just cleaned it for me, I'd be a little upset.
The staff down there reads the forum here too sometimes, so I hope they take note

 

Ye old Crappy Haynes manual says start it and listen for it to make a clicking sound, then warn it up and start it again, no clicking should be heard. Then it says check the resistance with an Ohmmeter it should be between 2 and 4.

I should point out too that I had just spent $475 or so a few weeks prior at Doxon's to have all my injectors pulled and cleaned.

They pulled them in the am, and sent them to a local shop to flow test and ultra sound clean.

My rig was bucking pretty bad on the highway do to the spray pattern being crappy in a few of the injectors.
My gas mileage also dropped to 7 MPG :eek:

That afternoon they put the cleaned injectors back in and it's ran great ever since.

I think I even asked them about cleaning the cold start injector back then, and they said you can't clean them, and in most cases they replace them.

I went with B Jay, just because technician's (at the dealership anyways) replace things before they would repair it!

 

My 98 with 270k km's is starting like a dog when cold, lots of cranking and reeks of fuel. DO I have a cold start injector or timer or both and does anyone know if this could be my prob?

your 98 does not use one, they got rid of them pretty much after 95
