Hi all
Just had my head rebuilt and, well I'm not very happy with the work the guy did. To start with the guy has "0" personality and I mean 0 so after I had talked to his brother about doing the block (he's ok) he introduced me to his brother the 0 guy. So when I got it back I really didn't want to get into it with him, I still might go back and give me my two cents.
Anyway, I have a question about the head on the exhaust side. You have those 4 tubes on top of the exhaust ports, I'm not sure what they are called but I believe they have something to do with emissions, the ones you end up blocking off. Looking inside the head in those 4 tubes, 3 of them are broken and 1 is I guess long the way they used to be (see pics)
Can i and how do I remove them? It seems to me that these tubes would hinder the flow of the exhaust
I should mention this is a 20R head

I would just drill them out. They should be removed or plugged if blocking anyways. Also I'm surprised it didn't come back cleaner like this.

 

I do not think I have ever actually seen those in place.....

Drill the top flares off and pull them through, Or mini air saw, cut the end inside of the exhaust port and pull them out.

Yeah, I don"t know and don't know why they look like they were blown up at the ends? Very strange, like a lot of other things on this truck.........

 

Ahh, I could almost smell that blue dykem............... brings back the past when we used layout line to tell us where to make the cut. Back in the 60s , was the only way till NC took over then CNC.........lost art

 

Here are pics of the combustion chambers, the guy who rebuilt it said there were some nicks in it so he did a little grinding! Guess I have some polishing to do............

 

Ok, All drilled out, what a pia, these tubes are hard. Had to use 4 different sizes drills to sneak up on it., finally got to where I could pull them out. I also went ahead and taped them for 1/8 pipe so I could put plugs in them
