If you have a Gmail account, you can customize your google page by adding whatever news or RSS feeds you want to it. I likes. If you don't have one, PM me with your email address and I'll invite you.

I love Gmail. I use it as my main mail account, and I've converted several others over to it too. I'm a big supporter of anything Google (no offense, Rob).

Why would I be offended? I LOVE Google. Not Gmail, but most things Google.

I just figured since you work for MSFT you'd be anti-Google. I have no idea why I thought that. :pat: I guess since Google has been stealing MSFT's employees and there's apparently bad blood between them now.

I love Google too. I'm still kicking myself for not investing in them before they were big. I knew they'd catch on... just didn't know it would be this much. The ulitmate for me would be if they'd create their own all-in-one Unix based OS that was easy as pie to use and included everything you needed in an OS. From the rate they're developing things, hopefully that won't be too far off.

May have it...

I think I did it.
I enabled it in the admin panel here, and used the URL in that example in this link for RSS:
http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showp...59&postcount=7

However the forumpath word was not needed, since the forum is the same as our domain name here, thus I tried the URL below, and it came up with some threads.

Did I do it right, this is for RSS?
https://www.yotatech.com/external.php?type=rss

Below is for RSS2
https://www.yotatech.com/external.php?type=rss2

I think I read somewhere that the RSS2 format is better?

So now what?
Do I need to link this somewhere, or do you who are going to use this feature just bookmark the URL into your reader?

PS, Rob, I DL'd that reader you linked to.
http://www.pnw4runners.com/temp/rss2.jpg

Problem though, I am getting a ton of pop ups from it in the lower right corner from new sites.
I click out of it and another one takes its place.
I hope that option can be axed.

You can shut that off in options section. You can configure how often you want it to poll the sites and how you want to be notified. You will figure it out.

Got it, pop ups are gone, and I clicked on the YT icon and set it to auto update the feed every five minutes.

The rest of the feeds are set to one hour still.

I also posted in that catfish thread right through the reader.
Pretty trick.

However...if private forums show up in the feader, I gotta pull the plug.
I am sure you understand.

From what I've seen/searched/read, when you create a live bookmark, FF keeps a port open to the feed source, thus allowing for immediate updates as the source provides them. This "should" work 'cause FF is expecting a live feed, not something that it has to poll.

update... I think I lied. It may be that FF isn't meant to get updates. I'm getting conflicting information from my research, but if you RIGHT_CLICK on the icon, there's a "Reload" option - that seems to be the trigger. Dunno for sure yet, like I say, there's conflicting info out here.

Adding in something like Sage will give you a full reader.

I've noticed a lag, ranging from 5 - 20 minutes. I wonder if there is an interval setting in vB. I don't think there is. I added this to my TOOLandFAB.com site also. Man that's cool stuff...

Man, I feel dumb, but I cannot get the live bookmark to work on my FF 1.5. Everytime I try, it takes me to the xml page showing the feed code. All I'm doing is creating the bookmark, using https://www.yotatech.com/external.php?type=rss2 as the location and naming it Yotatech. What am I doing wrong?

Okay, update-update...
I was more right the first time - the live bookmark buttin is in fact really and truely live. It will update without being coaxed. But, it doesn't hodl a port open, it polls. As such, the answer to the update frequency is...

...it's in the RSS document (driven by the server). (DOH!) In the case of YT, it's hourly. Here's the related code fragment:
Code:
<syn:updatePeriod>hourly</syn:updatePeriod>
<syn:updateFrequency>1</syn:updateFrequency>
<syn:updateBase>1970-01-01T00:00+00:00</syn:updateBase>

Thanks midi! I am gonna look a bit more into RSS, this just became very interesting to me.

Now the question becomes...should the frequency be changed? Does RSS create a large amount of load on the server. It shouldn't, but it's a good thing consider amongst any others.

And of course, it would only be fair to also thank Corey for the continued support and work on YT! You rock man!

Well, the sample document I just pulled is about 5300 bytes. So, if you figure 1% of the YT members think to subscribe, then that'd be 150(ish) people hitting the server for 5300 bytes once an hour - but they'll be spread across the hour. That becomes about 790k of extra data sent each hour, no matter if someone is there to read it or not (if the browser is open, it'll request it).

All things being equal, that's not a lot of extra load, nor bandwidth. And I'd bet that a 1% subscriber rate is high.

But, it could become "worse" if people are like me.. I ALWAYS have my browser loaded, and usually on a couple of different machines in the house or at work when applicable. So, I could easily be responsible for 3 pulls/hour on my own.

absolutely!
