I've done a bunch of reading on it when I've similar problems. I still don't know exactly what it is. The impression I've gotten is that it's like a swap file - it's memory (hard drive space) that windows uses to perform various functions... kind of like a swap file.

I've never found a good way to fix it, and I always end up reformatting. Sorry - hopefully someone else has a better answer for you.

Right click "MY COMPUTER", go to "ADVANCED" tab, hit "SETTINGS" under the "PERFORMANCE" section, go to "ADVANCED" tab, hit "SETTINGS" under the "VIRTUAL MEMORY" section.

Once you are in there, is the radio buttong that says "SYSTEM MANAGED SIZE" checked or no? If not, what is?

My recommendation would be to use "CUSTOM SIZE" and set the minimum to x1.5 of how much ram you have and the maximum to x3 of the amount of ram you have in your system.

Have you tried this with good success? I've heard that it should be 2-3x your ram, also heard that it should be 10-25% of your HD space. I've tried both but never had any luck.

Right click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, click "Properties".

In the window that pops up, the "General" tab should be selected. In the lower right-hand corner it should tell you how much ram you have.

I'm 99.9% sure it's 256, if you have 80gb of ram you are my hero.

You have 192mb RAM, so your virtual memory should be in the neighborhood of 512mb. With such a fast proc, you might want to consider upgrading the RAM. That might take care of your problems, since Windows would have less need to use the virtual memory if it had more real memory to access.

It just means Apple is coming out with a huge increase in RAM over what most PCs have now. New PCs from the factory have about 512 MB (0.5 GB) to 1024 MB (1.0 GB) of RAM. So what Apple is doing is increasing that at least 10 times.

I wonder if they'll still be using their old PPC platform, or if they'll be using x86. I can't wait for Tiger to be released for x86.

Works for me. Then again, I have 512MB's so I shouldn't be having a virtual memory problem anyways. Most people say x1.5 for the minimum because the whole virtual memory thing is not efficient and it gets confused when you set the minimum too high.

About Tiger for x86...I think that will only happen if Apple assures themselves a way for no one to use it on non apple hardware which will be VERY hard. If they do it, props to them. If they don't and just use Tiger with x86, they are dumb and will go down!

for windows xp, 512 IS THE MINIMUM.

trying to run 256 megs is like asking for too much for the system.

and will end up swapping out to VM.
