Thinking about getting a new router...
I found a killer deal on a brand new Netgear 108Mbps Wireless G Router. The regular price is around $100, and I can get it at 40% off from a bargain store I found it in today. I think that's a really good deal for that router.
This is the router I have now. Yes, it's only Wireless B, but all the wireless cards in my LAN are 802.11b... for now. I could always add a new Wireless G PCMCIA card for my laptop.
Question is... what would I benefit from getting the netgear router to replace the dlink?

Hi Chris!
A couple of things...
First off, it's cheaper from buy.com: ($49.99 after rebate with free shipping)
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.as...8&loc=101&sp=1
Then, unless you have trouble with the D-Link, or really wanna go to -G, I wouldn't switch. It's just $50 that you could be using towards something for the truck.

That is the exact same router I plan on getting in a few months if I get my Boeing recall.
I will still hardwire my two desktops to the router, but I will get the matching card for my laptop to go with it.
I am having problems with my current Netgear RP614 router.
Sometimes it will not connect, as the #1 light on it sits there.
Then all of a sudden the light will flash and I will connect to a site.
I have the latest firmware too.
Have had this router for 4 to 5 years, so I got my money for it.
NewEgg has it.

depends I guess. I only have 2 machines, laptop (before I broke it) and a desktop....I have a wireless G and I really like it, 54 meg transfers between the two computers, which I do alot of, I like to download music as I'm watching TV and put em on my desktop in the other room. So it really depends on what you want to do, if you just downloading from the internet and not transfering between computers then you'll see no difference at all and you'll waste your money. Unless you just like gadgets and new tech then you'll have some fun with it. Another thing is, I find 54 meg plenty faster, but thats just me.
Oh any I think something new is coming out, Wireless N and its supposed to be even faster. Might drop the price of anything out now, or even get you something else to buy.

LINKSYS, LINKSYS!!!
just kidding, in order to reap the benefits of the Netgear 108 Mb/s, you will need to get a netgear card, which is the same deal for anything with 802.11G technology. Stick with the d-link if it's not causing you any problems, since your DSL is probably coming in at 1.5 Megabits, and anything with 802.11b is running at 11 Mb/s. If you do, however, choose to get a new router, take a hard look at the Linksys offerings, Cisco owns Linksys now and I've had great results with the routers, especially the WRT54G.

Since I don't really like my router anyway, here's what I was thinking... I wanna get the Linksys WRT54G to use as MY router, and just let the other one stay running since I'd have just stuck it in my closet even if I had gotten the new router.
To separate the two, I'd use this linksys switch.
I'd also have the Linksys router broadcast a different SSID from the one I have now. Question is, will the two routers work ok with the two different wireless SSID's?

As for the other part...dude, I wouldn't go around telling people you are selling out your Internet connection. If it were free, I would be sympathetic and maybe even say you have a kind heart...but charging $20/month?
(although even if it is offered free, it is dumb. who's door will the RIAA be knocking at? certainly not the neighbors...)

I'm a little confused....what are you trying to accomplish by running two routers? (excuse my ignorance)
I've been running that linksys wrt54g for about 2 years now and it works great. For a while it was a little finnicky but I got it all sorted out. Its been running 1 wireless desktop, 1 wireless laptop, and my wired xbox and it has "hardly" given be any problems.

If I had two routers, I could use one that would be open for anyone to use and the other locked down and secured for only my use. Plus, I wouldn't mind having Wireless G capabilities available for when I have a Wireless G card.
