Strange problems with comcast high-speed
Im guessing this is just me, but its really weird and buggin the heck outa me. I have a cable splitter so the cable can go to my modem and the TV. The internet speed and everything is fine and everything, but, every day near the same time the modem doesn't get cable going to it but the TV does. Though, if I take the wall cable cord and put it directly into the modem (skipping the splitter) it works fine
Also, at night the cable works fine with the cord going to the splitter then the modem. This is a daily accurance, Its annoying having to switch the cables around every morning and having to switch them back every night.
I hope I made that clear enough. Kinda confusing describeing it. I wanted to ask here frist just it case somebody is having the same issue and knows whats going on. I hate calling comcast... they treat me like im and idiot.

I dropped comcast and got DSL because they kept upping the price on me. My DSL is just as fast, and about $20 cheaper a month.
Never had a problem with my cable internet, but my brother had occasional problems like you are describiing. He dropped them too because the idiots could not fix the problem.
Good Luck!

One thing to be sure of is that you have the splitter before anything like a VCR or TiVo. The data path should be:
Past that, it sounds like the modem is getting hung up from time-to-time. My router does the same thing (but, it "shouldn't").
When the modem hangs, what happens when if you leave it connected via the splitter, but unplug the power, wait a couple of seconds, the plug it back in? Does it sync back up to the line? Do you then get a response from the PC?
Has this always happened, or did it just recently start happening? If it just started happening, then Comcast may be having issues on their end and having to reset their modems and routers. I know that Comcast is in the process of rolling out 6mbps service and that could be causing problems.
Code:
Wall -> Splitter -> (VCR) -> TV
|
+------> Modem

The only speed you will notice is the speed at which they raise there rates! In my area comcast was just bought out, what a wonderful thing! They are crooks with the worst customer service in the nation! This is what happens when competition is not allowed. It's really sad...I never had a problem with my internet service....but I'm not going to pay $65 a month.
Cute little girl by the way Jim...I bet know you are really proud of her. I have a 2 year old daughter...they just wrap you around their finger.

I gave up on Cable internet long ago. They advertise 4mps. I've never seen it over 200kbs. The inherint problem with cable internet is that everyone plugged into the service shares the same peice of wire and the same darn cable. The more people on it the slower it does. Now DSL also shares the bandwidth with each other. The differnace is there are more frequencies on the lines they share. Also many many more seperate nodes in any given area. Your cable conpany maybe has 10 network through out the town with each cable having 100? frequencie, I forgot that tidbit it been awhile. The DSL is going to have 4-5 hundred nodes all seperated by 55 differant 56k badwidth frequencie per pair of telephone cable the 56th being your voice line for your phone, so even though there is less bandwidth the bandwidth is seperated, by many pathes. They limit sharing to roughly 30 dls subscribers per node. n top of that the main switch that patches to the net at the phone company uses an acual broadband switch which is many times faster than the cables listening and broadcast when clear system. WHen the ethernet switch incounter heavy loads it it switches evenly between nodes dividing up the bandwidth evenly, the cable tries to fire off as much as it can on a first come first serve basis and drops alot of pakets in the process. The main reason your having to swich your wires around at differant times. When you unplugged it your one reseting the modem and two creating a shorter path. under less loads your system is working fine in a less than perfect set up.

Thats interesting about you guys hating Comcast. I always liked them. I use DSL her in SC and at best case downloading a movie I'll average 150kbs, nothing special but respectable. My upload with DSL since I host an FTP is horrible, 30kbs tops.
In MD I have Comcast. Downloading a movie I'd say the average is 400kbs, and I wasnt surprised to walk into the room and see it spike too 550kbs ish. I pay 35 a month for DSL, and 42 a month for Comcast Internet. I have my own modem with both so I dont rent either.
I guess its all about location.
Anyway back to the topic. I if it does it the same time everyday its probably the modem hanging or a conflict of some sort. Do you have anything on your computer that does anything at that time? The time thing to me sounds like a coincedance. When it drops the connection have to tried just resetting the modem? Is it a nice splitter or the pos that Comcast provided you. Leave it plugged directly into the wall for a few days and see if its that, which I highly doubt since that splitter wouldnt have anything to do with time.

I'd hate to get rid of comcast cable because I love it. But if it keeps doing this I may just have to change to DSL.

I had the problem a while ago, like a couple months or so and it eventually started working all day like its supposed to. It worked fine for about and month and the problem started again.

if you lease, ask comcast to give you another.
if it's yours, buy from a store with a 30 day return policy.
i had similar thing. turns out it was the crappy dlink modem...
ended up with a motorola one that i picked up at walmart at like 2am.... lol.......

Hahaha... didn't realize D-link was crappy, thats what I have. Figures, I got it free from comcast from a best buy promotional thing. I may be switching to the Qwest 7mb like mv5841 said. I learned that its in my area and is actually cheaper than comcast.
I just hope comcast doesn't hastle me when I try to get rid of their service like AOL does.

Why in this thread does it say speeds are dictated by the ISP? Or is it just in my higher upload than download speeds?
