File transfering

Ok on the computer that I am on now... the CD Player/Burner died on me... it won't read a single CD or burn one... before I go to college I want to put all the pictures I have and just other things I will want to bring on my laptop that I am taking...

Is there any way to but a USB cord from the desktop computer to the laptop? Is there a program that I can use for this?

If anyone knows please help...

Ian

It's $100 now? Wow! I didn't even look. It used to be like $30.

Well that blows... I would take it if it were still 30... anyway to hook it up to a router or anything... if so please post a website... if you can just hook the desktop and laptop to the same connection...

Windows98 used to have a built in tool to direct connect two pc's with just a cross-over ethernet cable, haven't noticed if newer versions of windows still have it.

some thing like This router from radio shack will work for you. You didn't ask for wireless, but for $50 you'll probably find a use for it down the road. I have this same one & it's small enough to drop into my laptop bag. It has 4 regular ethernet ports on the back, you'd need 2 eth cables to plug your laptop & pc into the back (wouldn't have to buy any wireless adapters this way, just an extra eth cable.) I'm also assuming your laptop has a built in ethernet or a card for ethernet.

You'll have to set up both pc's for windows networking, which can be a lot of, uhhh, fun. A plain old hub would probably be made to work too, for about $30, but wouldn't be as useful at college.

If both machines have an ethernet card/port then you don't need a hub or router, a crossover lan cable will do the trick, you can either buy a crosswired cable of use an adapter with a regular one. Then just set up networking on both machines in the regular way.

I'd go the network route as well, but you could also find a new CD burner for dirt cheap. Loads of 52x drives for about $35:

Or if you have a gmail account, plenty of space to store em. Don't know if you can, but try zipping them all into one big file then upload to gmail. Just not sure if you can upload a zipped file or not.

If you want a gmail account, PM me with your email address and I'll send you an invite.

Well, I just tried and it wouldn't let me use a zipped file. If you use Outlook Express or Outlook or some other email client (Thunderbird even), you could attach all the pictures at once then send em.

So I will try that and I might as well pick up a burner for my mom anyways since I'm leavin and she won't know what to do...

Yeah I would just upload it all somewhere but it is going to be a few gigs of stuff... so that would take wayyy to long for me...

If you haven't resolved this yet, I used to sell these at CompUSA as an alternative to LapLink.

Should do the trick.

if this were me, get a simple router/switch.

set up ftp server on one machine and just connect to the server machine and transfer file that way.

or, if both are windows xp, use the REMOTE DESKTOP program and click on the DRIVES option.

one machine's HD will appear on the other...
