i assume there should be a program on your computer that is a driver for the card to send out a signal if there is a plug, unless its jsut a dummy plug with no hardware or software linked to it

You will need the proper cabling.
I would assume since you have the S Video jack on the back of the laptop you must have an NVIDIA or ATI based 3D/2D vid card installed.

In the aplet for them when you right clcik your desktop and choose properties, you will see the area in there to enable TV out.

I have links to very good cabling on my PVR site.

You will need the cabling also for audio out from your laptop to the TV, and info is on the above link.

My page deals with ATI cards, this page here deals with both.

you need to turn it on everything. Hook up your S-Video cable. Then turn it on, on the laptop. By default nothing is being sent to that S-Video connection. There shouldnt really be any software other then the video card drivers.

I dunno about Dell's but Toshiba you need to plug it all up and press FN+F5 .... Like Corey said there might be a software option to enable this. Although I have an Intel Extreme Graphics 3D card (dont laugh) with S-Video, only way to turn it on is manually with FN+F5

Dell is probably different so you are going to have to read the manual...

I found that linking a laptop to a television doesnt make a very good quality. It would be ok for a presentation on a small tv or projector. But sitting at home, trying to read the text gives me a headache after a few minutes. I have a 42" HDTV with settings for veiwing computer text too.

Playing a video game emulation is pretty neat though. The quality is as good as it was when it was on Nintendo heheh...

I agree, but maybe with a little tweaking you can get it looking halfway decent.

with a little tweaking you can get it too look more then half way decent. Turning the HD to progressive scan makes it OK. Its neat to play with.

I used my laptop has a DVD player when I was moving and my g/f and I wanted to watch a movie but we didnt have a DVD player. Other then the sound it was really good. The picture quality of a DVD through the S-Video was surprisingly good..

Its just the text that bothers me. I would get a headache after a few minutes of straining to read it.

I can not get text to look good at all on my TV in the other room from my PC if I open up a web browser.
Even by making the fonts bigger.

However for viewing back shows I record with my TV tuner card, it looks better than when I had the VCR hooked to the TV.

And games, it will blow you away.
Games running on my PC look just as good on the TV as they do on my monitor.

I just read what corey wrote and I was talking to my father about this. We hooked it up to his 61" JVC LCD D-ILA.

I booted up Quake 3 and WOW. Not only were the textures and colors impressive, it felt like I was playing video games at a movie theater.

Now I'm still on it and the text is definately alot better then my 42" Toshiba DLP but it still isnt that great. Like reading the time in the corner is a little tough. Oh well

Its still fun to play with. I'm using a Mircosoft wireless mouse and a Logitech USB keyboard with a 6" cord so that makes the laptop a little more game friendly, plus I dont have to have it heating my lap up when I'm surfing the net from the living room.

Dude, quit making me jealous
I can not wait to get a 20" or bigger wide screen LCD for my PC later.
Dell makes the 2005FPW which is like their FP2001 20.1" monitor, but the 2005 is the wide screen.
Good for games and movies.

I was over at Drew's on Saturday installing Unreal Tournament 2004 on his girl friends PC, and checking out BF2 that he just got.

He has a very nice Sony TV in the living room.
To bad my 40' cabling I have on my PC to my TV would not work over at his place, need about 60'.
I would have loved to have viewed a game on it.

Yeah, eventually I will have a small form factor PC for the living room to PVR with and play games, and I will also have a wireless keyboard.
It will look cool to game on the TV set.
Only problem is my 5.1 sound system is hooked to my PC in my bedroom
I would have to get another 5.1 system for the TV set.
That would be OK, that would wake up DVDs I play on the DVD player by the TV.

lol dont worry like I said, its my fathers TV.

If you are in the market for a bigger TV I HIGHLY suggest pricegrabber.com...

My 46" Toshiba at best buy was like 4000 bucks!!!!! I said 42" which I could have swore it was but its 46" now that I get looking at the model number....anyway

On pricegrabber.com I got the TV for 1500 bucks. Now its on there for like 1200!!! Its alot of money for a TV but the picture quality in HD is amazing and its only 15" deep. Its a DLP projection so you can see it from any angle. Its really quite impressive.

DLP is the only way I'm going when I get ready to buy my home theater centerpiece. I hate flat screen TV's. They're just a fad, and in most cases (those affordable by the not insanely rich), the picture is worse than any other TV. If you want the best picture, stay with a tube TV. However, the larger you get, the fewer options you have in that category.

I used to hate those old rear projection screen TV's because you couldn't see them from an angle and eventually you could see images "burnt" onto the screen. But they've come a long way since then, and I definitely would pick one over any other TV out there.
