Looks sweet, but will the antenna bang against the back of your truck? I notice it has the large spring at the base to allow flexion. The CB really fits nicely in the lower dash. I'm looking forward to installing one in my rig.

I was worried about that too, but it only bangs when I hit bumps. I might put a piece of rubber between it and the taillight to keep it from moving. Good luck with yours... it wasnt that hard.

Hey nice work there!

I do have to say though after some of the trail runs I've been on, I'm currently looking into covering the lower half of mine in foam or rubber to 1) maintain the life of the antenna and 2) prevent further scratches and scrapes against my body.

That spring flexes like crazy.

Nice job...you may want to look into getting a "quick disconnect" - Correy has one pictured on his website. It's real nice for driving in teh city - then being able to pop it on for the trials. Or just being able to take it off so it doesnt get stolen.

I would think that only the top part of the antenna would hit your 4Runner. I doubt your tail light is in trouble...but your roof may be. Time to put an expedition rack up there to take the beating

Here's a good picture of the quick disconnect. I've got one and it is definitely worth the $.

Got the picture and my supplies from this site:

Okay, I've got to know... what is it that a tennis ball is supposed to do?
Help keep the antenna rigid? Cushion the antenna from hitting other items?

Dumb as it sounds, I never found an answer to this when I was searching last year!

yea i think it just keeps it from hitting everything on site.

i installed my antenna just like mellapound except my rear bumper is more at an angle so now my antenna leans outward. i have to hold it closer to the vehicle with a cord. and it never hits the vehicle, only when hitting trees and slapping back

mellamo,

nice install

as for the antenna, i do two things: i have a rubber bumper on it and i tether the antenna at the top w/ a piece of bungee cord. one end hooked to the roof rack and the other on the antenna itself. works like a charm.

bob

btw, what does "mellamopound" mean? ive always wondered

or just ditch the spring. not really necessary back there as most of the antenna is blocked by the body. i second the quick disconnect. i have a 4' firestick on my front bumper w/ both a quick disconnect and spring. i run both so i can take it off before i head into garage parking and the spring helps when i hit trees and such.

i have a different model quick disconnect. mine is made by firestik and might be their "deluxe" model. it looks like a smooth rod of stainless (not like a disconnect at all) and the spring is retained inside the rod. my buddy tried ordering the same one i have but got the one pictured above instead and it doesn't seem as nice. first it looks like a disconnect and second the spring falls out the bottom when you take it off. sorry, no pics of it right here.

I like the install of the antanne and the idea of the quick release, however with my CB, i bought a Uniden that would fit inside the ash tray. All you have to do is take it out and slide the cb in. it works and looks great.

guys,

don't ditch the spring. the spring will allow the antenna to flex at the spring and not on the mount. if you run the quick-release mount and your antenna flexes, it will stress out the metal at the bolts holding your mount to your bumper. not good.

Nice install. I just picked up a CB myself and I'm looking for a way to mount the antenna. Your install might be just what I should do. Are there any laws saying they can't block your taillights?

Yeah get a quick disconnect! Save yuou the hassle of unscrewing it especially if it gets "stuck" on there from overtightening or corrossion.

I have the FireStik intertnal quick disconnect version. Very nice. IT'll add about 4 inches or so to the length of your antenna.
