I have a 4th Gen and not ready to cut/drill holes in it for a CB.
Any recommendations for a portable/removeable CB that I can get which will work OK? What range will should I expect from such a unit? I just laugh when I see the 8mile range posted on my little GMRS/FRS hand radios.

 

Not sure what you're thinking in regards to "portable/removeable"

A larger factor than the radio itself would be the antenna. You could go with one of those radios that has all the switches and dials on the mic itself like this:

but you would still have to install the antenna and wire through the coax.
If you're not willing to do this you're probably better off with the ones that look like a field radio:

 

Thanx, let me clarify. No antenna or radio to be permanently mounted.

WHat field radios are any good (CObra?) and are they good enough in terms of range and quality of signal?

I do not know about quality either, but I know both Midland and Cobra make handhelds. Midlands can be used as a handset alone or like the Cobra (Handset with an installed antenna). It is kind of like the "transformer" of CB Radios. It has a battery base, or an adapter base.


I went for the Cobra. No holes except in the channel of the rear hatch.

I have the Cobra and love it.

 

Do a handheld (like shown above) with a Wilson 1000 Magnetic Base and a SS whip. Nothing will be permanent then.

Install it and then just stop by a CB shop and they will tune the antenna for about $10.

The magnetic mount 1000 looks pretty expensive almost $90 list.

That's what I have, I think it was like $35. If you live anywhere near a major highway, go to a CB shop near by.

I went through this same thing when buying a radio....

I looked at the handhelds:

They're nice, but can sometimes be a bit short on RF power and features that you may want. If you're planning on needing a radio out of the truck a lot, then this is a possibility. Otherwise, they're kinda' heavy to be hanging on to all the time while driving around. Some offer the capability of using an external mic which is lighter, but then you end up just laying the radio on the seat.


I ended up with the Cobra 75WXST: (page down a bit)

It's a handheld, but with additional features that you normally only find on a mobile.

Works great, though I'll sometimes get good-natured flack from the guys I run with that I don't have a "real" antenna.

I also have the Cobra 75WXST unit and am very happy with it, definetly go with Alvin up at alf enterprises (this is where I bought my 2 meter radio), exellent coustomer service and wont steer you wrong.

Range is dependent on the antenna you have. The antenna that comes w/ the handheld only has limited range due to the antenna itself but attached w/ an external antenna you are just like one w/ the in dash units (or other units).
