Does anybody make a functional CB with "police" scanner capabilities?

 

I dont believe so. The bandwidth on a CB and most Police frequencies are a huge difference. Alot of jurisdictions are now going to the 800 series and are "trunked". Your best bet is to get a CB and a scanner if you want to listen in.

 

theres a way to mod your cb to get scanner frequencies. we did it in one of my labs, but i dont remember exactly what we did

 

I've seen models that can scan both bands, but it couldn't transmit. I was just hoping to get both without taking too much room inside the cab. Thansk for the replies, -Mike

P.S. If I were to get both, could they use the same antenna?

 

CB Channel 40 is like 26.xx Mhz and the lowest on my police scanner is 29.xx. i have a hand held portable scanner and love it, but at the same time it plugs in and doesnt waste batterys if i want it to. this is the scanner i have. picked it up on fEa Bay for like $60 http://www.uniden.com/productpop/00_...d_code=BC80XLT

 

The big downfall with having a CB/Scanner combo would be the limit in functions. (no scanning, limited channels, etc) You can pick up a used or even new CB for less than 50.00 AND get a decent scanner used or new for under 200.00 unless you need a digital scanner for your area, then the price will be over 475.00.

I'm with ya on trying to keep some space in the cab. I use to have my scanner mounted next to my left foot (near the gas release latch in my 4runner). Now I have it mounted under my glove compartment. Its pretty much out of the way.

Using a CB antenna would work on both by using a splitter, but I would imagine that would screw up your transmitting power from the CB, not to mention you scanner reception wouldnt be great since a CB antenna is designed for the 26.00 mghz band. Most jurisdictions are VHF and higher...most metro areas are now on the 800 mghz band.

My Ford superduty has both a magnetic mount CB antenna (I only put it on the roof when I use it) and an "on-glass" cellular look alike scanner antenna. It works rather well in my area. (Baltimore/Washington metro area).

You can purchase receivers that pick up police bans, etc as well as CB Bands but I don't believe you can transmit on the CB Bands. There are some high end receivers that also transmit but those I believe transmit on amateur bands and not citizens bands (e.g. Yaseu). A good site is www.universal-radio.com - look at their catalog.

Police/Fire service bands = 30-50 MHz, 147-174 MHz, 450-512 MHz, and 800-900 MHz, so the answer is no. Just buy a scanner.
