I'm having an issue with my CB. Whenever I transmit, the engine shuts off. At first, I thought it may be a power issue. For testing purposes, I hooked the CB radio up directly to the battery. No power lines running through the cab as I had it sitting on the front bumper. Engine stalls out as soon as I push the transmit button. I've tried different CBs and different antennas with no success. I can receive just fine. Any one ever run into something like this? As a side note, this is not my first time installing a CB. I have another one set up in a different vehicle. The truck is a 98 Tacoma.

I have other 12 volt accessories running on the truck. I have an ARB air pump that runs fine and does not stall the truck. That should be pulling more power than a CB.

Shorting it out somewhere most likely. It grounded correctly?

 

Could be radio noise traveling through the wires and interfering with the ECU. I think the Shack sells all sorts of goodies to eliminate radio noise.

 

But where? I took a CB and Wilson magnetic whip antenna from my other vehicle and set it up on the truck in question. The test CB was connected directly to the battery and sitting on the bumper. The Wilson magnetic antenna sitting 10 feet away. The only wires connected are the 12v wires from the CB to the battery.

 

Where is it grounded?

 

I think he's on to something here I ran my cb with a 600 watt liner and it shut down the ecu by power bleed over so check your coax sheilding replace it with a know good one and see what you get.

 

CB is grounded directly to the battery. Antenna is magnetic so there isn't a separate ground.

 

Antenna coax is not anywhere near other wires. It is just laying on the floor and along side of the truck. Keep in mind this is antenna #2, CB radio #2. CB #1 and antenna #1 has been completly unplugged.

 

Make sure the SWR is set. Each antenna has to be set for the radio.

You shouldnt have much problem with interference without a linear.

I think the post regarding RF interference with your ECU is more likely the real problem here.

Have you tried swapping radios / antennas with your other set up?

If this doesn't fix the problem, you may want to talk to the guys at Radio Shack or some of the HAMM radio forums and see if they know of a fix for RF interference with normal ECU operation.

Out of curiosity, does the vehicle have a security system, or remote start system installed that operates via remote control?

 

Yes, I have tried swapping radios and antennas.

No remote start or alrams at all. I don't even have electric windows or doorlocks.

Less than two bucks, dont have much to lose. Plus while you are there, you can pick the massive brain that the employee's there have too.

 

My experience is that devices like linked above usually keep engine noise from coming through the radio! Not radio transmissions from the engine!
