What is the Best GPS unit for the buck? Overstock.com has tons of selections for cheap prices. I figured i'd see what everyone thought I kinda like the Garmin Oregon 550T. It has tons of features and what not. but its 500 bucks! What do you guys think?
Well I don't mind what I get or how much is spent. I'd LIKE it to be able to "punch in" a coordinate and have the compass point me into the right direction. thats the number 1 feature im looking for.
Personally, I like the Garmin Rhino series. They Look GREAT!! But I haven't had any actual experience with them. My buddies friend has them tho and appearently really likes them from what my buddy says.
Most commercial navigation GPS do not have "punch in coordinate" feature they are more designed around roads and are adept in punching in addresses from a database. I could not input exact gps coords (lat,long) in my tom tom but I can with google nav. There are specific topographic gps units designed for off road use.
I have a Nuvi 265W. It's has bluetooth in it to use as a speaker phone while driving I think I got it at Costco. Look around, you can find similar units a lot of places. Or I think you can order them off the Garmin website too.
I may be mistaken, but I thought most GPS units could accept coordinates. Maybe not the cheapest ones, but anything of much value should
I really like the garmin Oregon series as well, I've had my eye on the 450 for a while. It's pretty much the same as the 550 except it doesn't come with the preloaded maps, you can save a hundred buck and just upload the ones you need. Maybe scuba will chime in, I'm pretty sure he has one of the oregons. Gotta love their compact and simple design.
I have a handheld IP7-style 60CX on my motorcycle and a 5" screen Garmin Nuvi 1450LMT in my car, both excellent. My wife has a Nuvi 265W with a 4.3" screen and loves hers. We all use the same software. We have been using Garmin since God know when and they never let us down. What let's you down is old maps!

Garmin software has it IIRC: you can put Lat/Long coordinates in and it navigates to it.
Got this cool radio (Eclipse AVN2210p) with a TOMTOM as the display. Cool thing is you can take out the TOMTOM and attach on your bike when exploring terrain. Cost me only $120 on eBay!
Oo that Tomtom display is sleek. I think it's the Garmin NUVI 50L that I've had for several years that has been pretty solid. No doubt that google maps in android/ios has beaten most of these in quality, but I like to have my navigation separate from my communication.
The L series offers lifetime updates (absence of which was a major scam for the old models), but the nice thing I found recently is that there are some open source maps floating around (dunno if any of you ever make it to either of our N. American neighbors) that you can just add to the memory of the GPS and it will be loaded in fine. Certainly the Lat/Lon feature combined with that is p good, but is everyone just on the smart phone grind now?? At least for daily driver, the traffic features of google and waze maps seem to be paramount.
