What's the red wire with black strip for?(radio)

1993 pickup dlx 4x4.
I installed an after market stereo and I'm not getting any sound from my speakers. I hooked all my wires correctly. The only wire that's unaddressed is the green one and the red with black strip.

I have the AM/FM radio only, no cassette, etc.

Green one is apparently "Radio Illumination," most online diagrams say not to use it at all. It doesn't have a label or callout associated with it at all in the FSM. I get slightly varying voltage while adjusting the dash light dimmer knob with the headlights on.

Red/black on my 92 dlx 4x4 was the only wire connected to the second plug on the back of the stereo. It is called out as "to Rheostat" in the FSM, and ringing it out with a voltmeter shows nothing with headlights off, and variable voltage with dash light dimmer knob when headlights are on.

I'm still waiting for my head unit to arrive, but I'm counting the red/black wire as the dimmer control.

All that said, I haven't tested the function of my theories, so don't get mad at me if you hook it up as dimmer and your house explodes.

No worries. Yeah I don't get any readings on it either.

So my stereo came in. I repinned the red wire into position "A10" on the main connector - replacing the green wire with the red/black wire in that connector. I capped off the green wire (not using it at all) and connected red/black to the dimmer wire on my head unit. 100% function out of the aftermarket stereo, including dimming with dash lights, and full brightness when dash lights/headlights are turned off.

Hope that helps.
