Some of you may recognize this as a double post, but please don't yell. I posted this question in an existing thread and didn't get an answer. I thouhgt I might have better luck opening a new thread for these questions.

The stereo in my truck got ripped off before I bought my truck - nearly two years ago now! (sucker - I probably saved $1000 'cause the guy didn't think to put a $100 CD player in it!). So now I'm finally getting around to fixing it and have a couple of Q's.

First, what goes in the hole? Right now I just have a gaping 2-DIN hole. I would guess there is a pocket available to fill the second DIN slot when I fill the first with the new stereo? And I'm guessing there is some sort of bracket I need to bolt the new unit to? Right now, I can't see anything to attach it to.

Second, down in the hole, behind the ashtray, is a box with cooling fins and a loose wiring harness. Was this an amp or something for the original stereo?

I won't have a problem getting everything apart and back together - it's just tough reconstructing something when you don't know what was in there to start out with.

The original stereo wass a double DIN.

You need the pocket from the dealer (about $7.00) and the brackets for the side of the factory radio (your single DIN will bolt right up)

You are describing the factory amp. Get a metra harness set and bypass the factory amp - it won't work with modern single DIN radios. Sell the factory amp on Ebay.

I think Metra or someone else sells the factory side of the plugs if the thieves butchered your factory harness.

Yeah, according to the records the factory unit went when the truck was new. I'll take that out. The factory harness is gone - I just have the wires sticking up, which is fine by me. Good tip on a new factory harness, though. Putting that in now would definitely save me heartache later - vs. just wiring it up direct.

you can actually buy a wiring harness that is the same as the vehicle side.

you normally buy a wiring harness so you wire it to the head unit and then plug that into the vehicle's OEM harness.

what isnt well known is that you can also buy "the other side" harness too.

first time i found out about this is when i bought a harness and got the reverse one instead...
